Short biography
Laura Talbot was the pen name of Lady Ursula Winifred Chetwynd-Talbot, a daughter of Viscount Charles Chetwynd-Talbot and his wife Winifred. She became a novelist known primarily for her 1952 book The Gentlewomen, about disruptions of class identity brought about by World War II. It was reprinted by Virago in the 1980s. Her other works were Prairial (1950), Barcelona Road (1953), The Elopement (1958), and The Last of the Tenants (1961). Lady Ursula was married four times, including to fellow novelist and playwright Patrick Hamilton in 1954. She and her last husband Dr. William James were killed in an air accident in 1966.
