This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki

Very polished coming-up-to-coming-of-age story, of two girls who meet every Summer when their parents holiday by the beach. The art is great, the story very gentle but well-paced.

Skim (NY Times Best Illustrated Children's Books) by Mariko Tamaki

Affecting, believable and resonant story of adolescent loaners dealing with alienation, grief, hypocrisy, the tyrrany of the masses, love, evolving friendship... that kinda stuff.

To be reductive, something between Heathers and Ghost World, but more rooted in reality than either. With a little bit of wicca added to the mix (I mention in case that seals the deal for ya).

Nicely drawn, with a brushy style, this is good comics.

Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass by Mariko Tamaki

The art was beautiful, Ivy is my hero, but Harley rode the line between endearing and obnoxious which caused the racial and social issues posed in this book to feel overlooked.

Roaming by Jillian Tamaki

It's 2009, and best friends Dani and Zoe are meeting up in New York City on a break from college. Dani's new college friend Fiona has come along, altering the dynamic between the friends. "Roaming" refers to Dani, Zoe, and Fiona's ramblings around New York City, as well as to the cell phone charges Zoe worries about (p. 283) when she's trying to get in touch with Dani. This realistic trip has its ups and downs as the three enjoy the blue whale at the Natural History museum, pizza from everywhere, and the overwhelm that is Times Square. Their three distinct personalities mesh and clash in a variety of ways over the five days they're in the city, staying in a hostel together. The color palette is restrained, in peachy-beige and muted lavender-gray. I was a little baffled by the ending, which sees the trio on a subway train to Coney Island before their flights.
