About the Author

Shaun Tan was born in 1974 in Fremantle, Western Australia. He is an artist, writer, and film maker. In 2006, his wordless graphic novel The Arrival won the "Book of the Year" prize as part of the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards. The same book won the Children's Book Council of Australia show more "Picture Book of the Year" award in 2007 and the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards Premier's Prize in 2006. For his career contribution to "children's and young adult literature in the broadest sense" Tan won the 2011 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award from the Swedish Arts Council, the biggest prize in children's literature. In 2015 his title, Rules of Summer, was one of four books selected for the United States Board of Books for Young People list of Outstanding International Books for children and young adults. His book, The Singing Bones, won the 2015 Aurealis Awards for Best Graphic Novel/Illustrated work. Shaun Tan just breaks my heart with all of his works. They're beautiful and life affirming and unsettling and hilarious and strange and truthful.

My favourite story in this "commonplace book" might be that of the two young brothers who set off across the wilds of suburbia to find where their street directory ends. Or it might be that of the strange little foreign exchange student, the size of a salt shaker, and the "cultural differences" his temporary family learn to appreciate.

Just one of many of Tan's little pieces of magic for all ages.

Weirdly, though the other ones from Tan are wordless picture stories—what I’d think are more accessible for kids—this one reads like a pre-K children’s picture book with its word->picture structure, and yet its content is probably only meaningful/accessible for adults. Would’ve liked a much longer and more detailed world from Cicada’s point-of-view, which Tan has proven himself very good at developing visually. Something in the vein of the video game INSIDE would’ve been interesting.… (more)

Maybe it was the whisky or the fact that I'm 20 years older than the targeted reading age, but I just didn't get it.
