The curse of Team 236 continues. Jane and Luke are trapped on a time traveling steam train while Matthew communes with the time map. There’s a surprising amount of historical detail in this book, considering that no St. Mary’s characters are involved at all. Jane and Luke are even outfitted in (not at all) accurate early 20th century costumes as the adventure begins at an Italian train station in 1911. The run-away train jumps them around the centuries in Italy and eastern Europe before ending, finally, in a 19th century Mexican insane asylum.

This series, and the original St. Mary’s series, have been reliable entertainment. I know that at some point favorite characters will be in deadly peril just prior to the last second rescue. ( It was a bit disappointing that no one was actually tied to a railroad track in this one.) Once in a while the author injects a dose of historical realism that is more than I want from a book like this. Just a bit of a trigger warning; the scenes in the Mexican asylum are scary and ugly. The triumphant rescue is more satisfying as a result.

This is the 11th book in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series about a the “Disaster Magnets” known as the time traveling historians that work there. I’ve read some in print and listened to most on audio. No matter the format they’re fun and entertaining. You must start at the beginning of the series due to the many ongoing threads of story. You can jump around it time with the crew from St. Mary’s, but you can’t jump around in the series order.

This one winds up some of the ongoing story but also ends with what appears to be some major changes ahead for the characters.

From a chance to see the Princes in the Tower before they disappeared, to an eruption that destroys an island and devastates Crete with a massive tsunami in the 15th century BCE these historians find all kinds of interesting things to document and risk their lives along the way.

There’s plenty of adventure, humor, danger, and interesting historical speculation by the author and it’s all highly recommended.

What would a historian give to return to study events in real-time? Max is recruited by St. Mary's to do just that.

This is an action-packed romp through time with a high body count and lots of insights into human nature.
