Short biography
Paul G. Tremblay (born June 30, 1971) is an American author and editor of contemporary horror, dark fantasy, and science fiction. He is also a juror for the Shirley Jackson Awards.

Tremblay was born in Aurora, Colorado, and raised in Massachusetts. He attended Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1993. He obtained his master's degree in mathematics from the University of Vermont in 1995.

In summers between college, Tremblay worked at the Parker Brothers factory in Salem, Massachusetts, primarily in the warehouse and assembly lines. After graduation, he began teaching high school mathematics and coaching junior varsity basketball at a private school outside Boston, Massachusetts called Saint Sebastian’s School, where he still teaches today.

In 2015, Focus Features optioned his novel A Head Full of Ghosts. It is in development with Team Downey (Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey) and Allegiance Theater (Dan Dubiecki) as producers. FilmNation acquired the rights to The Cabin at the End of the World in April 2018, before its publication.

This felt slightly disjointed for Tremlbay's usual work. I remember feeling so much more immersed in his earlier works, this just felt a little all over the place. Granted, this was a short story collection so it was obviously a different format, but it really didn't stick with me, or immerse me in the way his earlier work has. May try to read again at a later date.

If you were in the 18-25 age group in the 1980's you will probably not only like this one but will also understand it a lot more than us 'ancient ones". It's described as "A darkly romantic tale of gothic obsession set to a post-punk playlist of the mid to late 80s stumbling into the early alternative rock years and is guaranteed to bring cynical joy to horror loving Gen Xers". The character of Art Barbara is endearing as well as simply frustrating...for lack of a better word. Paul Tremblay manages to bring something new with his take on one of horrors most enduring myths...the vampire. Mercy, the other main character, was hard to read at times. She seemed to me she was less well written than Art... either that or her "anti-cool girl schtick" was simply nerve grating to me since I didn't grow up in that era. Large parts of the story went on forever without adding anything new and frankly could have just been omitted altogether. It's probably one of those books that you need to be a big fan of vampires and zombies to really get into. I've read other books by this author and enjoyed them, but this one just wasn't for me.… (more)

Closer to 2.5 I guess but "it was ok" sums up my thoughts about it better.
The first third of this novel did a good job of putting me on the edge of my seat: it was unnerving and built in a solid, suspenseful way. After that, however, it got repetitive, and the long flashbacks to Andrew and Eric's pasts felt kind of dry, like an easy way to try and get the reader to sympathize with them. The pacing is just downright all over the place and bounces from slowwww periods of nothing to fast-paced running around. I will say this is kind of far outside of genres I normally reach for, and I just picked this up for a Sunday binge read, so I'm definitely not the target audience. It was a good idea, but despite the wild moments of suspense and bloodshed, it ended up being dull and just nothing special.… (more)
