Vasquez reads and signs his debut novel, IN THE HEAT, picked by the New York Daily News as a Beach Read for Guys. An avid boxing fan, Vasquez received his MFA while working on a psychiatric ward and counseling at-risk high school students. These experiences show in his story of a hometown hero boxer at the end of his career on a mission to bring home a runaway teenage girl, set in his native Belize. Jim Swain calls it a "terrific debut (with) smart plotting, excellent dialogue, and a natural gift for storytelling", and James W. Hall says it's "a sinewy, sweat-soaked story about an honest man struggling to uncover the truth in a tangle of lies and treachery". Vasquez now lives in Apollo Beach and is copy editor at the St. Petersburg Times. (booksense)
