Galina Pavlovna Vishnevskaya, born in Leningrad, Russia, was a soprano, opera star, and recitalist. Among her frequent roles were Violetta, Tosca, Cio-cio-san, Leonore, and Cherubino. In 1955, she married as her third husband cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, with whom she had two daughters. In 1974, the couple left the USSR and eventually settled in the USA and Paris. In 2002, she returned to Russia and opened her own opera theater in Moscow. She published her autobiography, Galina: A Russian Story, in 1984.
