It explains the various theories on the origins of depression. It goes into great detail about the working of the brain that are suspected of being involved, and the possibility of genetic factors. Wasserman also explains the various antidepressants, their side effects, apparent method of working. This is the part of the book most subject to updating in the new edition. In addition, she explains a variety of psychological therapies, their underlying philosophy and method. This is certainly a lot more helpful that simply the patient to get help.
In all, a very detailed and rich source of information, and accordingly not an easy read. The patient may wish to read the most relevant sections of the book first. As an example, one may not be as interested in the biochemistry of depression as in the antidepressants with which the doctor may seek to treat it, and read this section first. Having been established on an effective drug, the patient may then wish to read up on the various types of therapy available in order to seek a helpful practitioner.… (more)
