Bit disappointing as an anthology. The premise (illustrating Missed Connections from Craigslist) is excellent in theory, but doesn't really deliver on paper. Possibly partly due to the unremitting desperation of the Missed Connections themselves, but mostly, I think, because they're actually very difficult to turn into interesting, engaging and satisfying stories. In the end this mostly kinda dragged, which was a shame and not really the fault of anyone involved.

I'm not normally a huge fan of autobio comics, and the main plot here is fairly familiar, but Wertz has enough inventive whimsy, craft and humour to make it work. If you don't like Wertz's humour I doubt you'll find much to connect with here, but if you do then it's an entertaining, engaging read.

A listing of emotional portmanteaus that would be absolutely tedious were it not for the sporadic Julia Wertz cartoons.

Most of the book is junk like this floating in the middle of an otherwise blank page:

ILLOGICAL + EMOTE
ILLOGIMOTE

v. to feel in a way that contradicts or undermines one's intellectual understanding (of a situation)

This whole book strikes me as an attempt to use the shotgun method to make fetch happen. One of these fetches gotta hit, right?… (more)

Julia Wertz has long shared funny stories that happened to her while drunk in her "Fart Party" series, but she finally shares the full story of her alcoholism and steps (forward and back) on her road to recovery. It is sort of average, as the cover claims, but still kept my interest and amused me even as it backs away from the rapid-fire humor of her previous books.

A lot of other books I've read by or about alcoholics tend to focus on people with big extroverted personalities, so it was fascinating to get the perspective of an introverted person who sort of kept her alcohol abuse to herself while simultaneously sharing it with all her readers across various media.

Her self-examination is pretty thorough but she doesn't get so focused that she omits the people around her, as these sort of books sometimes do. In fact, at a certain point she goes overboard, giving most of her dozens of cartoonist friends a cameo or two in the back half.
