The 30s, 40s, and 50s were a unique period in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. These three decades with a high water mark of evangelism, during which time thousands of people came into the church through efforts large and small conducted by speakers great and humble. This price is book takes the reader behind-the-scenes, with a nervous evangelists (many of whom were very young) prayed, planned, studied, pitched tents, did odd jobs, preached, San, visited, and debated––and felt fortunate to have received a call to the ministry. For the wives, evangelism involve coping in various forms. "Living quarters" might be the back of the big tent, a chicken house, or, in fortunate circumstances, a small cottage her apartment. The princely salary of a few dollars a week at the stretch to cover all expenses. And of course the young wife must be smilingly standing by her husband's side at all the meetings. This is a masterful and readable human interest history, as told by the church's foremost woman writer.… (more)

Growing up seems to be, for some people, uncomplicated in a happy adventure. For others it is frequently a painful and frustrating experience.
