British picture-book author and artist Anna Wright, whose two previous contributions to the form - A Tower of Giraffes: Animals in Groups and Magnificent Creatures: Animals on the Move! - were gorgeous works of natural history, turns in this third title to the classic Christmas carol of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Each two-page spread features one verse of the song, as well as Wright's gorgeous mixed media artwork...

Although her third picture-book, The Twelve Days of Christmas is only the second I have picked up from Anna Wright, following upon the beautiful Magnificent Creatures: Animals on the Move!, which I greatly enjoyed. I was immensely excited, given my appreciation for this artist's work, as well as my interest in Christmas carol picture-books, to see it this past weekend at my public library! It is a lovely presentation of the carol, and one that is, in keeping with its creator's interest in animals, a little different. Here there are no human subjects. The eight maids a-milking are a litter of little pigs suckling, the nine ladies dancing are butterflies, the ten lords a-leaping are grasshoppers, the eleven pipers piping are rabbits, and the twelve drummers drumming are woodpeckers. Even the five gold rings, although they make it in, are depicted as the playthings of a group of frogs. This is definitely an animal-centric version of the carol, which comes as no surprise, given Wright's other titles.

I found this little edition unexpected, and absolutely charming. The artwork is gorgeous, and the choice of subjects creative. Recommended to fans of the artist, and to anyone seeking beautiful but slightly different picture-book presentations of The Twelve Days of Christmas.

British author/artist Anna Wright, who made her debut with A Tower of Giraffes: Animals in Groups, returns to the world of picture-book natural history in this lovely volume. Here she profiles twelve different kinds of creature, from sea turtles to zebra, and describes their various migrations...

Both informative and beautiful, Magnificent Creatures: Animals on the Move! is picture-book non-fiction at its best! The artwork, done in pen and ink, watercolor and collage, is absolutely gorgeous, utilizing lovely fabrics and shades to capture the wild appeal of the various creatures being depicted. This is my first book from Wright, but I certainly hope it will not be my last! Recommended to anyone looking for appealing new picture-books about animals in groups, and in migration.… (more)
