Isabella Murray Wright was a member of a large interconnected network of landed Scottish families who worshipped together at the Episcopal Church in Stirling. Her private letters and journal provide a window into the manners and customs of her class, amid the rapid development of Stirling in the 19th century, with the advent of a new postal service and the coming of the railway.

A most engaging book. Writing to her nieces, Isabella Murray Wright (born in 1846) sets down what she knows of the history of her parents' families, explaining how past events relate to the portraits, jewellery, old dolls, &c., her audience has seen. There are Jacobite connections and the Wrights and Murrays belong to a network of well-established families living in comfortable houses run by servants, who are both loyal and well-loved. The overwhelming sense is of a lively and supportive family, far from the Victorian stuffiness we expect, although the limitations to women are apparent. Pain, suffering and death are not overlooked, and at times the asides can be a bit batty. The writer delights in nursery rhymes, and fears that the introduction of compulsory education has impoverished the glories of the Scots tongue.… (more)
