This is a book useful in the week after a death as you search for ways to grieve in a communal way. There is also a chapter on washing the body; I wish I had read that 10 years ago and been prepared. As a Roman Catholic, I am steeped in ritual, but this author has helped me imagine ways in which this rich liturgical tradition might be shared more widely and ways in which the tradition itself might be enriched. For example: in speaking of someone (what we might call a eulogy, but which Sarah York calls a soul sketch) it's not enough to say someone loved children or had a sense of humor: you need concrete examples of this.… (more)
