Description | Alpheus Starkey Williams (1810-1878). Civil War general. Graduated from Yale; was a lawyer, judge, and newspaperman. Fought in the Mexican War. A brigadier as early as May 1861, he most of the war as a division commander, primarily in the XII corps; occasionally he served as corps commander. Major General from January 1865. Later became a Democratic congressman, dying in that office. |
