Character description

Charlotte Pitt (neé Ellison) is the second of three daughters of a middle-class family; her father is a merchant-banker. The police send Thomas Pitt, an unusually well educated police officer, to investigate murders in the neighborhood, and he and Charlotte fall in love. The marriage is regarded as a serious mesalliance on Charlotte's part, and she must adjust a lower-class life style. Her family relations, including her sister who has married a peer, allow her access to a range of society that it is difficult for Pitt to access, and she often helps him with his investigations.
