True Stories of Law & Order: The Real Crimes behind the Best Episodes of the Hit TV Show by Kevin Dwyer

Character description

Darrell Cabey was one of four young men shot by Bernie or Bernhard Goetz on a 2 train in Manhattan on December 22, 1984.  Goetz claimed that they were trying to mug him.  Cabey, along with Troy Canty, James Ramseur, and Barry Allen were together on the train when Goetz entered.  Canty asked (according to him) or demanded (according to Goetz) five dollars, whereupon Goetz opened fire on all four.   The case opened an intense debate on the limits of self-defense and vigilantism

Cabey won a civil suit against Goetz, but it is unknown if he ever received any money.
