Character description

George Sykes (1827-1880): Union general. A graduate of West Point (1847), he was a regular army officer when the Civil War began. Made a brigadier general in 1861, he led the regular division in the Army of the Potomac in the Peninsular Campaign, and was promoted Major General in later 1862. When George Meade was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac in 1863, Sykes became commander of the V Corps, which he led at Gettysburg and for the rest of 1863, but lost his command when the army was reorganized. He stayed in the regular army until his death, eventually reaching the regular rank of colonel.
