Character description

1.) A journalist in Alton, Illinois, and proprietor of the Courier, an 1850s antislavery newspaper in a part of Illinois that was a largely pro-slavery. He was a good friend of Abraham Lincoln, and urges him to attend a meeting in Decatur meeting that was a preliminary to the organization of the Republican Party.
