Grace Morris Allen was a granddaughter of Charlotta and Harry Pyles. Educated, she worked at a number of schools. She founded a school in Burlington Iowa, originally for black children that was so successful that it attracted white students. Widowed, she met Laurence Jones, a black man attending the University of Iowa. They corresponded for a number of years. Eventually, Jones realized his dream of founding a school for the poor in Mississippi, Piney Woods, and Grace married him and worked there as a teacher. The school survives to this day, with most students being on scholarship.
