Character description

Horatio Nelson Taft was an examiner at the Patent Office in April 1861.  His daughter, Julia, who was about 16 at the time, knew the Lincolns intimately.   He kept a diary that is a source for events in Washington, and is now in the Library of Congress, Manuscript Division.
