Character description

Inês de Castro (1325-1355), a Spanish-Portuguese noblewoman, was the lover of Pedro, heir to the throne of Portugal, and the mother of his 3 children. She was murdered on the orders of his father, King Afonso IV. After he inherited the throne, Pedro I had Inês's body exhumed and declared her to be his lawful wife and queen. Inês has since become a national heroine, and the tragic story has inspired many literary and musical works.
