Character description

Joseph Abraham Norton (1818-1880) was born in Deptford, England and migrated to the USA with his parent is 1820. In 1859 he proclaimed himself "Norton I, Emperor of the United States" and subsequently "Protector of Mexico". He spent most of his life in San Francisco, California, where he was seen to be a harmless eccentric.
