(Fictitious character) Katharine Holloway is allows no-one to call her Kat except for Daniel Macadam. She is a very skilled cook. In her late twenties when the series starts, she is considered too young to be a cook, but people who taste her food are satisfied.
Other workers in the kitchen include Charlie, who blacks the stove, and Elsie the scullery maid.
Katharine Holloway married in her teens and was pregnant when her husband died intestate. It turned out that her marriage was bigamous, and since he had made no provision for her and their child, everything went to his legal wife and her children.
Her posthumous child was a girl named Grace, born when Katharine was about 19. She has lived with good friends of Katharine's, and she sends support. Grace has become Katharine's raison d'etre for all of her efforts. She wants to buy a house where she can live with Grace, and they can run a shop. Holloway is Katharine's maiden name, but cooks always get the courtesy title of Mrs.
