The Virago Book of Suffragettes: Votes for Women by Joyce Marlow

Character description

Lily Maxwell was the first Englishwoman to vote in a parliamentary election -- mistakenly. Lily’s name, as a small shop owner, appeared in error on the list of elligible voters in Manchester. She went to the polling station, accompanied by male supporters, on November 26, 1867, and officials allowed her to vote. Her case helped persuade other women in Britain to campaign for the right to vote.
