Character description

Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson (1748–1782) was the wife of Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States -- but never became First Lady because she died long before her husband was elected. She was born Martha Wayles into a wealthy Virginia plantation family and had 6 children, of whom 2 lived to adulthood: Martha "Patsy" Jefferson Randolph and Maria "Polly" Jefferson Eppes. Jefferson was distraught at her early death and never remarried.
