(Fictitious character) Reiko Himekawa [surname Himekawa] is a Lieutenant with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police's Homicide Division. She is twenty-nine, and has gained the position at the young age of 27 based solely on merit, lacking any kind of political or family connections, and overcoming barriers created by gender.
As the series opens, she is Lieutenant and Squad Leader in the Homicide Division, Unit 10, of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. (TMPD). Her squad includes:
Tamatsu Ishikura - Sergeant
Kazuo Kikuta - Sergeant
Junji Otsuka - Officer
Kohei Yuda - Officer
Her boss is Captain Haruo Imaizumi, the head of Unit 10. Also in Unit 10 is Lieutenant and squad leader Mamoru Kasaka whose investigation style is very methodical, as opposed to Reiko Himekawa's more intuitive and holistic approach, and they are often at loggerheads. Imaizumi allows each to use their preferred method.
Reiko thinks of her squad as a family with Sergeant Ishikura as the father, Sergeant Kikuta as the older brother, and Officers Otsuka and Yuda as the younger brothers.
Reiko is the elder of two daughters. The family home was in Minami Urawa in Saitama Prefecture; Reiko sometimes goes there between cases, but she prefers to live in a hotel in Tokyo when she is on a case. Her younger sister, Tamaki, has married and has children, but her parents, under pressure from an aunt, are anxious for Reiko to wed and keep trying to set her up. It seems to be implied that as the elder daughter, Reiko's children would have a special status
Reiko was raped and stabbed as a teenager, and the kindness of a police woman, Detective Michiko Sata, made her determined to become a police officer as well. She likes the hierarchical and clearcut nature of the police organization.
