Character description

Sir (John) Lambton: Character in the widespread folktale of The Lambton Worm. While fishing, Lambton pulls a strange creature from the water and drops it down a well. He leaves the area, and while he is gone, the creature grows into a great serpent which causes much destruction. Lambton, returning, finds that he must fight the serpent -- and, if he is to win, he must kill the first living thing (from his family) he sees after the win. He tries to arrange for it to be his dog. But when he slays the worm, his father runs to greet him. Because Lambton cannot bear to kill him, the family is cursed for nine generations.
