Character description

Stephen Augustus Hurlbut (1815-1882): Union Civil War general from Illinois. Originally a lawyer and Republican office-holder, he was appointed a Brigadier General in 1861. He led a division at Shiloh. Most of his service after that time was as a district commander rather than in the field. He was charged with corruption. After the war he returned to politics and served in several diplomatic posts despite more charges of corruption.
