Description | William Herbert (1423-1469): One of the first Welshmen to join the English peerage. Knighted in 1449, he found in France in the early 1450s, then joined the Yorkist side in the Wars of the Roses. When Edward IV became King, Herbert was rewarded first with the title Lord Herbert and then, in 1468, with the Earldom of Pembroke (8th creation). But when the Earl of Warwick rebelled in 1469, he defeated Herbert's forces at Edgecote. Herbert was captured and executed. Not to be confused with his grandson William Herbert (1501-1570), 1st Earl of Pembroke (10th creation, 1551). |
