Memory Road Trip by Krista Marson (MRT Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by kmarson (author): Seeking reviewers for my soon to be released travel memoir! I am offering free ebooks to anyone that is interested. ($3.99 value). All I ask is an honest review in return to be posted here and one other book site of the reader's choice.

Description: MEMORY ROAD TRIP is a compendium of travel stories ranging from the sublime to the surreal as told by a money-strapped traveler who traveled the world on the cheap. The journey down memory road is a heartfelt excursion into the past that takes armchair explorers on an odyssey of life, love, and loneliness. The circuitous path is full of philosophical nooks and crannies, and many stories get told from the bottom of a psychological well. Readers will join this intrepid Gen X-er as she gets herself locked inside a cathedral, lost in the desert, and held up at machete point by Zapatista rebels. Her passion for nature, art, history, and architecture gush across the page, along with her contagious curiosity in life and her pragmatic acceptance of death. Many of her stories speak to the angst that simmers inside all of us as we confront the many absurdities that exist in this world. People have always told this adventurer that she needed to write her travel stories down. She always thought that she'd have forever to write them, but now she knows that forever is not as long as she thought it was.

Description: From award-winning and international best-selling author Melanie A. Smith comes a standalone steamy contemporary romance about a rock star, a former fan, and the real meaning of redemption.

Kristoffer “West” Westberg is just out of rehab and ready to reclaim his rock-god status. But when his return to fame is threatened by a former fan turned rock magazine writer — and huge critic of him and his band — West is forced to reckon with the reality that he’ll need to prove himself before earning his redemption.

Max Marshall is feisty, a little too honest for her own good, and so not here to babysit a fallen rock star. And nobody has fallen farther in her mind that Kristoffer Westberg. So when she’s forced to catalog his so-called “apology tour,” she has little hope that it’ll be anything but a headache dealing with the entitled, washed-up rock star she used to worship before she knew better.

If West hopes to have a snowball’s chance in hell of changing Max’s — and his fans’ — minds, he’s got some serious groveling to do. Will he manage to fake it till he makes it, or will he be exposed as the lost cause everyone is convinced he is? And will he learn the real meaning of redemption in time to win Max’s trust and her heart?

Mother Blues by Owen Thomas (OTF Literary)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Owen_Thomas (publisher): Owen Thomas Literary, is giving away 50 Kindle copies of "Mother Blues," a sweeping new book from the best-selling, award-winning author of "The Lion Trees" and Signs of Passing.

A video book trailer can be found at https://youtu.be/cR22bUMRjy8

Description: What if your childhood harbored a dire warning about your future? What if your life and the lives of dozens of others, including your future child, depended on you deciphering that warning before it is too late?

Mother Blues is about the maternal relationships we never knew existed, the evil we never expect, and the redemption we never think possible. Subversively feminist and environmental, this is a novel about mothers: those we have loved and lost, those we have never known, and those who have always been there for us whether we have realized it or not. And while this is not a novel about blues music, the blues is everywhere in this story, both grounding it in history and pushing it forward in a slow, rhythmic ache.

As Hurricane Harvey submerges Houston, Davis Payne escapes to the small desert town of Corbin, Texas. He is escaping much more than a 100-year flood. He is escaping a life of guilt and a childhood haunted by death. When Davis was ten, his mother drowned saving him from a boating accident. Years later, his first love – a schizophrenic twice his age who believed that Davis was destined to save her from a shadowy, universal malevolence – burned to death before he could reach her. Davis has no idea of any connection between these tragedies. He knows only that if he does not leave Houston and stop drinking, he will not live to see his late thirties.

But, of course, there is no starting over; there is only another step deeper into reckoning. Davis soon finds his life inextricably tangled with the lives of others fighting to keep their own heads above water. For Corbin, Texas is not the quiet refuge Davis expects. Beneath its dry, dusty surface Davis finds a town rife with terrible secrets, restless legacies of love and heartbreak, and life-and-death dramas that rival his own.

Filling the background of these various dramas, is the rapidly unfolding drama of Corbin: a tiny town teetering on the precipice of momentous change. A plan is afoot to transform Corbin with a commercial river walk fed from an engineered diversion of the Pecos River. With a development price tag in the hundreds of millions, the Corbin River Walk project stands to become the single largest private development effort in the history of south Texas. Except for environmentalists fighting to preserve the habitat of a tiny minnow species, most of Texas is rabidly in favor of the project. Unfortunately, no one realizes that the Corbin River Walk is but a well-conceived, brilliantly executed and violently defended fraud perpetrated by the Russian mob.

If there is one maternal presence that binds together the characters of this novel, living and dead, it is the blues itself. Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Etta James, Big Mama Thornton, Mahalia Jackson, and all the timeless mothers to that quintessentially American genre are here, a soulful Greek chorus singing from the shadows, warning and imploring, offering hope, and bearing witness to lives adrift and in danger of capsizing.

Description: This is the Dream, ten stories less about dreaming than not dreaming. Ten stories about pulling free the gossamer mask of illusion and seeing the face of what has been true – about ourselves, about the people we choose to love, and about our path through the woods – from the very beginning.

JOHN. The bus driver whose lunchtime encounter with Andromeda reunites him with the one person he has spent a lifetime choosing to avoid. (“Everything Stops”).

WYATT. The Appalachian who wakes from a dream that his wife has been abducted by aliens to find that she has gone missing and wishing the explanation could be so benign. (“Little Green Men”).

(“Failure to Thrive – Act Three: The Birds”).

DANNY. The laid-off, newly separated factory worker whose life is in such dramatic contrast to that of his next-door neighbor, and George Clooney, that robbing a convenience store seems like his best option. (“Hating George Clooney”).

ZOE. The Hollywood intern, working on a movie about a superhero with random powers, managing a telephone relationship with an anonymous criminal, and excavating the secret structure of creation. (“Random Man”).

Message in a Bullet - A Raymond Mackey Mystery (Book 1) by Owen Thomas (OTF Literary)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Owen_Thomas (publisher): Owen Thomas Literary is giving away 50 Kindle copies of Message in a Bullet -- A Raymond Mackey Mystery, the first in a new detective series from the best-selling, award-winning author.

Description: Message in a Bullet, Owen Thomas' foray into the shadowy world of literary noir, is the first in a series of three novels based on the same principal character.

Raymond Mackey is a struggling crime writer. His friends call him Mack. But friends are in short supply these days. Mack’s thirty years as a homicide detective came to the kind of abrupt, ignominious end that tends to make friends dry up and blow away. It matters little that Mack was never actually a mole working for a shadowy, seemingly omnipresent mob boss. Somehow, the evidence was there anyway and the scandal ended everything for him overnight. Lucky to stay out of prison, Mack lives in a netherworld of forced retirement, spinning his memories of old homicide cases into pulp fiction and working part time as a shopping mall cop. His wife Marlo, the greatest criminal investigator Mack has ever known, has been dead of pancreatic cancer for nearly five years. That leaves his ancient Smith-Corona Corsair, a pack of Camels, a bottle of Old Forester, and Marlo’s bourbon-loving cat, Phil, as Mack’s only company.

Almost. Because Mack also keeps himself company. The psychiatrists call it Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder. Mack calls it Triple-D. But crazy also works. It means he watches himself, usually from an overhead perspective, as though someone has tied a floating camera to a back beltloop on a long string. It makes him feel watched, and not by someone inclined to judge him kindly. So Raymond Mackey comes complete with his own Greek chorus. “Watch yourself, Mack,” people tell him. He has no choice.

Cold-Blooded Ringers: Damned Reflections Book 2 by Julian M. Coleman

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by jmc001 (author): This is the second book in the Damned Reflections trilogy. This is a gritty, graphic, and grim saga about two gorgeous and immortal killers. Your review is greatly appreciated.

Description: Immortal identical twins, Sara and Sammy, mature into beautiful yet fierce fighters. Although they live in different centuries, they found a supernatural way of coexisting. They weren't born fighters, but the brutalities of their parallel realities made them ruthless killers.

An intense and historical fantasy from the IAN 2016 Outstanding Paranormal/Supernatural Book of the Year author. From the beginning of the Damned Reflections trilogy, Julian M. Coleman weaves a harsh, paranormal saga filled with betrayals, sacrifices, and bloodshed.

Samantha Montgomery turns the tables on a pair of murderers. Despite her heroics, guilt sends her to an asylum, and her once privileged life falls into a hellish nightmare. Unable to overcome the trauma she endures at the psychiatric hospital, she hides within herself until she appears to be in a vegetative state. The only person to shock Sammy out of her despair is Sara.

Sara's life descends into chaos. Her beloved sister is dead, and she finds herself alone with a newborn. She tries to assimilate in a harsh mid-western town, but she's too impulsive to fit in with the population's norms. Armed with a six-shooter and a chip on her shoulder the size of Oklahoma, she quickly becomes a wanted fugitive as she racks up an impressive number of kills.

Can Sara put aside her bloodlust long enough to jolt Sammy back to reality?

Alpha Max: An Existential Romp through an Absurd Multiverse by Mark A. Rayner (Monkeyjoy Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by markarayner (author): Hi folks!

It's been some time since I did a giveaway here, so I'm rectifying that now! I'm the author (and publisher) of this satirical and somewhat philosophical take on the multiverse. I'd love a review if you enjoy the book. And I know the blurb mentions Douglas Adams, but please don't measure this against that very high bar in terms of humor.

If you've read any of my previous books, then you'll be interested to know that Dr. Maximilian Tundra is the main character. (In fact, he's MOST of the characters.) If you haven't read my previous books, that won't matter to the story, because you'll get to know all the Tundras in this one.

Thanks!
Mark

Description: Maximilian Tundra is about to have an existential crisis of cosmic proportions.

When a physical duplicate of him appears in his living room, wearing a tight-fitting silver lamé unitard and speaking with an English accent, Max knows something bad is about to happen. Bad doesn’t cover it. Max discovers he’s the only human being who can prevent the end of the world, and not just on his planet! In the multiverse, infinite Earths will be destroyed.

Personally, Max thinks the multiverse is in big trouble, because he can’t even keep his toenails clipped on the regular, let alone stop the apocalypse. His only “allies” are a race of manic pixie aliens and dozens of other versions of himself; and let’s face it, both groups are annoying as heck!

From award-winning author Mark A. Rayner, Alpha Max is a silly and serious spoof of the science fiction and superhero movie trope of multiple realities. Fans of the humorous science fiction of Douglas Adams and the black humor and satire of Kurt Vonnegut will love this dark comedy that will make you think as well as laugh.

The Religious Transaction by Timothy Chen (Self-Published)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by timothy-chen (author): I'm giving away 50 copies of this book for review! If you love thought-provoking books and want a new, unorthodox way of looking at religion, then this book might be for you. Get it for free now and leave an honest review when you are done - I would love to know how this book has influenced or challenged your thinking!

Description: Religion is a transaction.

Think about this: would you worship God if there was no heaven? Or what if worshipping Satan guaranteed heaven for you? Would you still worship God?

Like it or not, most of us expect something from religion (excluding atheists and agnostics). It could be wealth, happiness, knowledge, or a good afterlife. In return, we offer our praise and devotion. This is the religious transaction. For many, this may not even be a conscious transaction. Expecting blessings from God seems as natural as a baby expecting milk from a mother.

Inspired by the author’s own spiritual journey, this book explores the most common transactions in religion. It structures and makes explicit our deepest desires from God. The goal of the book is not to answer the age-old question of whether religion is true. Instead, the goal is to help readers answer the question that really matters: Is God worth the effort?

From award-winning and international best-selling author Melanie A. Smith comes the fourth book in a series of steamy contemporary romance novels.

A forbidden affair that's practically irresistible...

Alessandro Giordano is the lying, selfish bastard Emily had pegged as bad news. Is their attraction just a diversion, or could it really be more?

Flights for Freedom by Steven Burgauer (Battleground Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Steven_Burgauer (publisher): Grab a chance to read a brand-new book about the 17th Aero-Squadron in World War One.

Description: The dangers of flying an open-cockpit WWI aeroplane were many. Flights for Freedom is the exciting story of one brave American flyer — “Petrol” Petronas of the 17th Aero Squadron — as he learns to master the undisciplined two-winged fighter called a Sopwith Camel.

Shot down over France during the course of a bruising air battle, Petrol is then shuttled from safehouse to safehouse by a beautiful yet defiant woman of the Dutch Resistance.

In the background is the poppy-covered landscape known to us as Flanders Fields, a battlefield choked with dead and dying soldiers. Children, orphaned by the war, find safety with a kindly Catholic priest, who raises carrier pigeons vital to the war effort on the rooftop of his Abbey. Every day, his birds carry secret messages to and from the frontlines for Signal Corps.

Life-threatening challenges lay at every turn.

Two thousand volts pulsate through the electrified border fence that separates Holland from Belgium, enough to kill a man. The trick in crossing the border alive is in knowing who to bribe and how much to pay. Otherwise, there is no way for a downed American flyer to get safely across the heavily patrolled border into Holland and back to England.

Will Petrol make it back to England alive? Will he make it back carrying the top-secret plans for an advanced gunsight that has been smuggled at great risk out of Holland hidden inside an embroidered cotton flour sack?

Join the story and find out.

Steven Burgauer is the author of two well-known World War Two books, including: Nazi Saboteurs on the Bayou and The Road to War: Duty & Drill, Courage & Capture.

The Deep Places by Ross Douthat (Convergent)

Offered by SierraMoon1 (publisher): Convergent Books is happy to offer 30 finished copies early to the winners of this giveaway. We would love to create excitement ahead of the book's release with these early copies going out to the giveaway winners!

Description: In this vulnerable, insightful memoir, the New York Times columnist tells the story of his five-year struggle with a disease that officially doesn't exist, exploring the limits of modern medicine, the stories that we unexpectedly fall into, and the secrets that only suffering reveals.

In the summer of 2015, Ross Douthat was moving his family, with two young daughters and a pregnant wife, from Washington, D.C., to a sprawling farmhouse in a picturesque Connecticut town when he acquired a mysterious and devastating sickness. It left him sleepless, crippled, wracked with pain—a shell of himself. After months of seeing doctors and descending deeper into a physical inferno, he discovered that he had a disease which according to CDC definitions does not actually exist: the chronic form of Lyme disease, a hotly contested condition that devastates the lives of tens of thousands of people but has no official recognition—and no medically approved cure.

From a rural dream house that now felt like a prison, Douthat's search for help takes him off the map of official medicine, into territory where cranks and conspiracies abound and patients are forced to take control of their own treatment and experiment on themselves. Slowly, against his instincts and assumptions, he realizes that many of the cranks and weirdos are right, that many supposed "hypochondriacs" are victims of an indifferent medical establishment, and that all kinds of unexpected experiences and revelations lurk beneath the surface of normal existence, in the places underneath.

The Deep Places is a story about what happens when you are terribly sick and realize that even the doctors who are willing to treat you can only do so much. Along the way, Douthat describes his struggle back toward health with wit and candor, portraying sickness as the most terrible of gifts. It teaches you to appreciate the grace of ordinary life by taking that life away from you. It reveals the deep strangeness of the world, the possibility that the reasonable people might be wrong, and the necessity of figuring out things for yourself. And it proves, day by dreadful day, that you are stronger than you ever imagined, and that even in the depths there is always hope.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Mylibrevs (publisher): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

I hope you enjoy this book and post a review on Amazon.

Description: “That Fibro…” series of books are insightful meditative books that use words & pictures to talk of my journey with Fibromyalgia. These books reflect what I have experienced with my Fibromyalgia & how I have coped so far.

They are honest & I openly give my thoughts on how Fibromyalgia has affected my life. I do not say it has been easy but I choose to remain positive in my outlook.

We take for granted our good health only realising how fortunate we were when it is no longer there. When a long term chronic illness comes into your world nothing will ever be the same again, but in a strange way it can bring many rewarding changes.

I believe all of life has a purpose & though my health has certainly challenged me & taken much of that which I was sure of away it has also brought me a new adventure & a new purpose.

Written by native speakers from different parts of the Hispanic world, this book offers:

-over 20 short stories to give readers a glimpse of the Hispanic culture
-an extensive list of colloquial Spanish terms and expressions
-cultural explanation or clarification where needed

The Clearing by Samantha Cook (Evernight Teen)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by SMC_Scookie (author): Thank you so much for showing interest in my book. I really hope you enjoy it. Reviews on GoodReads and Amazon are much appreciated!

Description: Editor's pick at Evernight Teen. It's a short and fast-paced young adult dystopian novel set in a post-apocalyptic village ruled by psychics.

In the last surviving village, Ruby has made a name for herself as a rebellious teen. She challenges the Seers who use their visions to execute criminals before they commit their crimes, and, just like her father, she faces banishment into the forest of the undead.

When a Seer sacrifices themselves to protect her, Ruby believes she has a future worth dying for – one that could help reconnect her village to undiscovered settlements. One worth waging the village's safety, just like her father.

With her friends risking their lives alongside her, Ruby must find someone who understands the psychic-undead link to uncover the Seer's not-so-heroic intentions. The psychic’s prophecy might be against her, but Ruby still has a chance to save her village if she is willing to go against everything she thought she believed in.

The Bourgeois Anarchist: A Novella by Sam Gridley (Finishing Line Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by NewDoorBooks (agent): This novella has been published in paperback by Finishing Line Press. As the author's agents, we can supply review copies in PDF, EPUB, or MOBI form.

Description: An aging activist—a professed anarchist
since her college days—is drawn into a
violent affair that pits her lifelong political
principles against her moral intuition.

Susie Alioto is a longtime political militant. After college she spent two decades in an anarchist commune, and at age 66 her beliefs haven’t wavered. She protests with young people to demand justice and human rights. She marches for gun control, for Black Lives Matter, for action against climate change. A portrait of her special anarchist hero, Errico Malatesta, hangs on her refrigerator with an inspirational quote of his: “Impossibility never prevented anything from happening.”

Yet Susie now teaches at an expensive private school, and her life is comfortably middle-class. Her son Eric, a budding mathematician, mocks her as a “bourgeois anarchist.”

As the story opens, violence breaks out at a peaceful rally, and Susie is injured. A young woman dressed in Antifa gear rescues her, and Susie is drawn into a mysterious intrigue involving angry activists and devious capitalists, gentrification, arson, even mobsters. Cops pound on her door to demand information. Though Susie tries to hew to her principles, the true nature of justice becomes muddled, and her anarchist heroes (including the grizzled Malatesta on her refrigerator) provide no clear answer. People’s lives are at risk, and she doesn’t know what to do. The dilemma escalates into an existential crisis.

In the midst of this turmoil, Susie stumbles into unexpected romance. But is the new man any more reliable than the ones who’ve failed her in the past? Meanwhile her son, the apolitical math geek, adds an offbeat and comic perspective that may offer a clue to the personal and political intrigues.

God 4.0: On the Nature of Higher Consciousness and the Experience Called 'God' by Robert and Sally Ornstein (Malor Books)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by RobertOrnstein (agent): You will enter to win one of 10 paperback copies of New York Times bestselling author, psychologist and Stanford brain researcher, Robert Ornstein's legacy book. This giveaway is in coordination with the launch of the book on October 15, 2021. After you win, we would appreciate you sharing your review here and would be more grateful for an additional review on Goodreads and Amazon.

Ornstein authored more than 20 books on the nature of the human mind and brain and their relationship to thought, health, and individual and social consciousness. His books have sold over six million copies worldwide, have been translated into dozens of languages and used in more than 20,000 university classes.

Description: This book is about what it means to go beyond our ordinary perception of reality, and to understand why, throughout human history, almost all of humanity has had the concept of transcendence and connection to “the other” – to "the spirit world" or “God" or "the One behind it all.”

Drawing on the modern research - from neuropsychology and religion, to evolutionary psychology, anthropology, archeology, and genetics — the authors delve deeply into what we now know about how the process of transcendence happens in the brain and the ways in which it has been sought since Paleolithic times. They begin by coalescing findings from the shamans of the Ice Age (God 1.0), to the first temples, priests and gods of the Neolithic era and Mesopotamia (God 2.0), to the Axial Age prophets and the three major monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam (God 3.0).

Teaching Black History to White People by Leonard N. Moore (University of Texas Press)

Offered by UnivTexasPress (publisher): In the wake of the devastating deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor in the summer of 2020, educators, advocates, and community members have been looking for ways to reengage Americans in the important conversations around race and the Black Lives Matter movement.

As an historian who has spent more than two decades teaching Black history in the Deep South, Dr. Moore has witnessed the transformative power of teaching Black history to white people. The importance of a new book—the first book—that shows a successful pathway for building an educational, historical foundation of racial understanding, cannot be understated. It is our fervent hope as the publisher of Teaching Black History to White People, that this crucial groundwork will become the first step toward reparations, healing, and reconciliation. We are happy to be giving away copies to get Dr. Moore’s book into the world.

Description: Leonard Moore has been teaching Black history for twenty-five years, mostly to white people. Drawing on decades of experience in the classroom and on college campuses throughout the South, as well as on his own personal history, Moore illustrates how an understanding of Black history is necessary for everyone.

With Teaching Black History to White People, which is “part memoir, part Black history, part pedagogy, and part how-to guide,” Moore delivers an accessible and engaging primer on the Black experience in America. He poses provocative questions, such as “Why is the teaching of Black history so controversial?” and “What came first: slavery or racism?” These questions don’t have easy answers, and Moore insists that embracing discomfort is necessary for engaging in open and honest conversations about race. Moore includes a syllabus and other tools for actionable steps that white people can take to move beyond performative justice and toward racial reparations, healing, and reconciliation.

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by SavannahHendricks (publisher): Win an eARC! 5 lucky winners will get to read the book before it releases on October 19th.

Description: Two strangers, two dreams. They'll need more than a Christmas miracle; they'll need each other.

Craving a change of pace and spending more time with her adopted daughter, overworked E.R. doctor Lorelei Parker has rented her estranged relative's house and taken a fill-in position in Oakvale, Minnesota, for December. It's the kind of place she can imagine raising Mary Ann and having more time to be a mom - if her parents didn't hitch their dreams to her. They were against her being a single mom and wanted to see her climb the corporate ladder at the city hospital.

Oakvale resident, Tyler McCain, runs his family's combination real estate/bowling alley businesses. He's trapped in duty and obligation and can't stop daydreaming about buying the thriving bookstore across the street. A love of books won't be enough to walk away from his parents' business, though. If he chooses his dreams, it'll spell the end of the McCain legacy and cause everlasting guilt. However, if Tyler can confront his parents, the only way he can afford to buy the bookstore is to use the funds he saved for traveling the world to explore the places from all his favorite books.

With the new temporary doctor in town, Tyler's the go-to person for the rental and is drawn to Lorelei and their similar circumstance. Together they acknowledge the weight of perpetually pleasing their parents and letting obligations and duties squeeze their own dreams out of the picture. As Tyler showcases the small-town's charms to Lorelei, a friendship builds, and chaos unfolds when her parents show up for a visit. In a short time, she becomes a part of the community, from the Christmas tree lighting to the Christmas feast, and falls in love with it all, including Tyler. Yet he knows the rental and position are only temporary, even if he's falling in love with her too. The desire and importance of raising a family in a small town is a long-time goal for them both. But can the dreams of Oakvale last beyond December?
