The Cynic in Extremis by Jacob M. Appel (Able Muse Press)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDF sent by author. Please consider adding this book and my other titles to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future.

Description: Poems. Finalist for the 2017 Able Muse Book Award. Eclectic characters in everyday scenarios populate Jacob M. Appel's THE CYNIC IN EXTREMIS. We attend a sister's second wedding with a "hand-me-down groom"; trick-or-treat with a young son; encounter a former teacher long retired, still critical; relive difficult ancestral memories of the Holocaust. Full of fun, wit and insight, these poems present—often unapologetically—uncomfortable truths gleaned from close examination of social norms and conventions mostly taken for granted.

Description: Do you ever feel hopeless in a world filled with pain and injustice?

Discover how the final teachings of Jesus can give you hope and inspiration.

Are you disheartened by senseless suffering and violence? Are you a Christian searching for encouraging guidance? Pastor Daniel Sweet and author Andrew Gilmore understand your struggle. After helping thousands find encouragement through the gospel message, they’ve teamed up to help you weather this troubled world and rediscover your faith.

The Last Lessons of Christ: Living by Faith in an Age of Despair is a powerful guide to help you be a light in the darkness and renew your convictions. At a time when so many Christians seem to have resigned themselves to despair or apathy, it is useful to remember that Jesus taught something radically different.

On the road to Jerusalem for the last time before his crucifixion, Jesus used every precious second he had left to prepare his disciples for his absence. Whether by miracle, object lesson, or parable, Jesus focused on one thing: faith. In contrast to the watered down version of faith we see in mass media throughout Western culture, Jesus taught that faith can move mountains.

Through encouraging parables, relevant lessons, and personal anecdotes, Sweet and Gilmore share empowering messages that can be applied to your everyday life. Easy-to-read with a touch of humor, this inspirational guide will help you rediscover lessons from scripture to transform your life.

In The Last Lessons of Christ, you’ll discover:

- How to rise above a world full of despair and reclaim your hope
- A deeper understanding of Luke’s gospel that will bring you unexpected joy
- How to make a difference in the world through spiritual empowerment
- The historical and cultural context of first century Israel
- Relevant lessons you can turn to over and over again, and much, much more!

The Last Lessons of Christ is the fresh look at faith you need amidst a world of turmoil. If you like learning through God’s wisdom, living an inspired existence, and seeking out hope, then you’ll love Daniel Sweet and Andrew Gilmore’s life-changing guide.

Read The Last Lessons of Christ to rediscover the type of faith Jesus taught his own disciples!

She emerged within a dark sea of green, shielding her eyes against the crescent moon’s pale blaze. The twinkling stars hummed softly, discordant against the chattering birds below. The lush leaves rippled in the breeze, tempting Fi to dip her toes in for a swim. The wind blew at her back and she turned east to face it. The fresh air carried the salty spray of the Shimmering Sea. Although she could not see it, she knew it was right there. Her ears caught the distant waves crashing against the shore. One last step. She thought.

Description: A mystery novel, but also a satire of religious mystery novels (ie. if you are offended by mild profanity or an irreverent rabbi, please do not request.)

From the jacket:
Two elderly spinster sisters––Florence and Lorraine––have lived together ever since the death of their wealthy father, living on generous stipends provided in his will that continue until one of them marries––at which time that sister is cut off financially. The sisters’ family is shaken up when Florence invites them to her wedding. The morning after the wedding, Florence is found dead in her bed. Was it an asthma attack as her new husband and the police believe or did someone enter her room in the middle of the night and suffocate the old woman with a pillow? Local amateur sleuth Rabbi Jacob Kappelmacher is brought in to investigate the suspicious death. He soon discovers that all of the sisters’ relatives stayed overnight following the wedding and could have strangled the old woman in her sleep. So could have the bridegroom. But who did it? And why? With no money and no motive, why would anyone kill the old woman? Rabbi Kappelmacher begins his investigation by interviewing all of the interested parties, intent on figuring out the convoluted and devious crime––and the sinister culprit behind it.

The First World Problems of Jason Van Otterloo by James Bailey (James Bailey)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by James_Bailey (author): Hello! I'm offering a review copy in epub or mobi format, in exchange for an honest review on Amazon.com (ASIN:B07JDPQ154). When you request a copy, I will send you a Book Funnel link, where you can download it in whichever format you prefer.

Description: In Jason Van Otterloo’s neighborhood, the Fourth of July fireworks are provided by his drunken parents brawling in the driveway. One moment they’re not speaking to each other, the next they’re on the couch like teenage lovers. He’s not sure which is worse. He’s been waiting for them to grow up for nearly 16 years, and it doesn’t seem likely to happen any time soon.

Desperate to escape, Jason takes on any job that comes his way with the dream of saving enough money to get his own place. When the border patrol snuffs out his landscaping career, he talks his best friend Drew into enlisting with him as a caddy at the local country club. His income might not be sufficient to move out on, but it’s plenty to cover his first date with Gina—if she’s willing to overlook the minor detail about having to take the bus to the movies. Life would be so much easier if Jason were old enough to drive.

Gina proves a nice distraction from the circus at home, at least until Jason realizes he has competition for her attention. “I want to come right out and say something,” he tells Drew, “but at the same time I don't want to know for sure.” At coffeehouse poetry slams or via late-night email exchanges, his fellow intellectual Drew is always there to provide perspective. But the one topic he can’t help Jason make sense of is Rob and Janice Van Otterloo’s rocky relationship. “Maybe they'll learn how to become boring and safe like my parents,” Drew suggests, when they finally seek marriage counseling. “I don't want them to be like your parents,” Jason replies. “It wouldn't be authentic.”

Nor would it be as entertaining. Told entirely through emails between Jason, Drew, and others, The First World Problems of Jason Van Otterloo will appeal to fans of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and readers who best enjoy their teen angst cushioned in humor.

The Mask of Sanity by Jacob M. Appel (Permanent Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): PDF sent by author. Please consider adding this book and my other titles to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future.

Description: On the outside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a pillar of the community: the youngest division chief at his hospital, a model son to his elderly parents, fiercely devoted to his wife and two young daughters. On the inside, Dr. Jeremy Balint is a high-functioning sociopath—a man who truly believes himself to stand above the ethical norms of society. As long as life treats him well, Balint has no cause to harm others. When life treats him poorly, he reveals the depths of his cold-blooded depravity.

At a cultural moment when the media bombards us with images of so-called sociopaths who strive for good and criminals redeemed by repentance,The Mask of Sanity offers an antidote to implausible tales of evil gone right. In contrast to fictional predecessors like Dostoyevesky's Raskolnikov and Camus' Mersault, Dr. Balint is a man who already has it all —and will do everything in his power, no matter how immoral, to keep what he has.

Be aware that this is a blend of novel and script writing. This is on purpose to increase the pace of the story. If you're a hardcore novel reader, you may not understand the format.

In those tough times, almost everyone is reeling from a collapsed economy and the ensuing recession. 8 fishing nets on the ocean floor, dragged by an octopus up to the shore.
The sea creatures are working hard to clean their living environment of ocean pollution.
Inspired by powerful visuals of ocean pollution, this book will teach your child not only numbers and how to count but also the importance of taking care of our environment. Children will love learning how little changes they make can protect our planet.
1,2,3, Who's Cleaning the Sea is the second book from award-winning and Amazon best-selling author Janina Rossiter in her 'concept picture book' series. Janina Rossiter has again combined two subjects with imaginative drawings, resulting in a beautiful book that children and adults will enjoy reading.
This picture book will teach your child to associate numbers with their quantities while also learning about the importance of keeping plastics and other pollutants out of our oceans. Younger children will be able to count along and slightly older children (ages 4-6) will learn to make logical connections between numbers and facts. Readers of all ages will enjoy the pictures, the story, and the message.
The original hand-drawn illustrations in black ink marker on a background of acrylic art are exquisite and will entice young readers to turn the pages as they discover the fascinating world captured by the illustrator's imagination.
Filled with glorious paintings, this highly imaginative picture book will not only aid children with learning to count, they will also learn about protecting the environment as they take a journey under the sea. Truly delightful.
~ Samantha Vérant, author of HOW TO MAKE A FRENCH FAMILY
Stunning images of sea creatures cleaning the ocean form the backdrop of this fun and educational counting book that young children (and adults too!) are sure to enjoy.

The Gunman And The Clown: Ten Short Stories by Stephen Gospage

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Mylibrevs (author): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

I hope you enjoy this book and post a review on Amazon.

Description: The ten short stories featured in this book are essentially about people confronted by life-changing events: some of their own making, some forced upon them. Whether it is the hasty removal of a key from a cupboard, a man's discovery of his long-lost brother, a tourist's decision to snatch the passport of a dead man who has just robbed him, a radio presenter faking his own death or a fateful phone call to a woman who is about to meet her illicit lover, these kind of turning points link all the tales together. The stories recount how individuals react to such events. While most of the protagonists seem to be outwardly likeable, their actions do not always deserve our respect. However, as fellow human beings, their motivations (revenge, love, duty or just curiosity) should be familiar to us.

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by Mylibrevs (author): This book is available as ebook only in epub, mobi and PDF formats.

I hope you enjoy this book and post a review on Amazon.

Description: Essentially a children's story based on my personal and imaginary experiences with 5 other children, as a nine years old evacuee during 1944 living with my mother and sister in a stately home called North Aston Hall in Oxfordshire. The owner of North Aston Hall, Mrs Hermione Hichens, was a wonderful benefactor who as a small boy I venerated, and subsequently have written this story as my tribute to her. She was undoubtedly one of life's unsung heroines and is the ""fine lady"" portrayed in this book. I met American servicemen who were billeted in the grounds of the Hall before they went to Normandy on D-Day, where they were mostly killed.
All book proceeds will go to a charity called ""WaterAid"" who have pledged to bring clean water and proper sanitation worldwide by 2030, which is my way of trying to perpetuate the wartime spirit I learned from the Americans and from Hermione Hichens.

Description: “The not so quiet life of librarians…”

Life is a book… and every person is a chapter.

Everything’s looking up for Robin Walker. It’s 1994 in New York City, and he’s been transferred downtown to the 58th Street Branch Library. Ready to move up the ladder, Robin is excited about the opportunities that await him.

But success, personal or professional, is as elusive as a first-edition rare book. Robin struggles with his strange new work environment as this motley crew of employees generates more drama than a runaway bestseller. He doesn’t know who to believe – or who to let in. And as potential romance mingles with devious machinations, there’s no telling where Robin’s story will go. All he knows is that he must see it through to the very last page.

Call Numbers is a captivating and multilayered adult drama. Through realistic dialogue and situations, author Syntell Smith has crafted a modern-day classic about the trials and tribulations of adulthood. Because a library is usually the last place you’d expect high drama, but for these characters…it’s long overdue.

The Road to Vermilion Lake by Vic Cavalli (Harvard Square Editions)

This book is an eBook, not a physical book.

Offered by VicCavalli (author): If you are interested in Literary Fiction, feel free to request a copy of The Road to Vermilion Lake (PDF & MOBI format).

Description: "The novel tells the story of . . . [an] ordinary life, that of Thomas Neal Tems, a blaster's assistant and first-aid attendant who lives and works on a construction site beside a glorious, remote lake. The site is being developed by a Swiss company into an ecologically friendly village, and Thomas begins a romance with the talented and imaginative architect who designed the site, a devout Catholic. The world that the characters must navigate, however, is decidedly not a romantic one. It is marked by painful past experiences, dysfunctional families, tragic accidents, alcoholism, and drug overdoses, all of which seem to derive from an inability to reach beyond the superficiality of existence. And yet, this is a world of second chances, for those who desire to change their imaginative perspective, to seek a sense of depth and enchantment that is deeply embedded in the tangible world, particularly in the body and in the natural world, as well as in the creative world of contemplative thought."

Insensible Loss by Paul Michael Peters (Paul Michael Peters)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by paulmpeters (author): 1 of 9 paperback copies signed by the author will be drawn and delivered to you for your reading pleasure when you win.

Why should this be your next read?
"I have read other of Paul Michael Peters' books - and this one ranks right up at the top of the list. It was fascinating and certainly did not end the way I thought it would. The back and forth between the history and the present was really well done."

"Paul Michael Peter’s novel “Insensible Loss” is a truly unique piece of literature that seamlessly combines a little bit of slightly futuristic fantasy and magic with a realistic story of empathy and the struggle of witnessing human suffering and the death process. I love the idea behind the organization that the main character in the book works as a volunteer for, known as NODA (No One Dies Alone)."

"So first of all, the storyline was absolutely amazing! It's a bit of a puzzle, and just when you think you've solved it, all of the pieces get mixed up again! Talk about plot twists.."

"The story is riveting, the characters unpredictable and fascinating, the twists deft and the writing flawless."

"Insensible Loss is one of my favourites books from 2016... Short, bittersweet, and to the point Paul Michael Peters tells a story that feels like bits and pieces I've read before, but pulled together in a new and compelling story."

Description: If you had the chance to live forever, would you take it?

2053: An old man, Viktor Erikson, lies on his deathbed. Alone and with no known relatives, he is tended to by Olivia, a nurse. He has only one request: that she reads to him.

The request is not unusual, but the battered, leather-bound tome she must read is no ordinary book. Written in 1839, it chronicles the discovery of the fountain of youth by Morgana de la Motte – and Viktor Erikson.

What starts off as a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas in search of riches and eternal life soon transforms into something quite different: a clash between two personalities bound by love and deceit, locked together by a terrible burden of necessity.

What lengths would you go to – and what price would you pay?

As Oliva reads through the ancient book, she discovers a quest for truth and meaning as Viktor and Morgana relive the greatest sufferings and sorrows of humanity, over and over again.

In such a timeless loop, can Viktor or Morgan save their own true selves? Or will their unstable alliance, forged on the fine line between love and hate, turn into a tangled web of deception?

Insensible Loss is a dark historical thriller, breathlessly following Viktor and Morgana through a centuries-long adventure. Switching between the present and the past, Peters’ masterful storytelling make this fast-paced, imaginative epic a bold exploration of a past spiraling out of control – and a future that has never been more uncertain.

Rural Virginia is swept by an epidemic of human resurrections. An alien disguised as a Latvian chef opens unwittingly his restaurant opposite an abortion clinic. Jacob M. Appel's Miracles and Conundrums takes us to a world of hope and desperation, where everything is possible, but so much seems far beyond reach.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): Paperback sent directly by author. Please consider adding this book and my other titles to your Librarything bookshelf, as this enables more giveaways in the future. **Note that only one free copy is available per person; thanks in advance for understanding**

Description: LITERARY SHORT STORY COLLECTION: The frustrations of romantic love in its various guises—a domineering kindergarten teacher for a dashing artificial foliage designer, a suicidal physicist for his star student, a dialysis patient at a sleep-away camp for the camp owner’s daughter—provide the common theme for the stories in Jacob M. Appel’s seventh collection. We meet a psychiatrist dabbling with infidelity during a crisis in which rain turns into truth serum, a Finnish-American soldier charged with facilitating his commanding officer’s extra-marital affair, and a couple transporting a wealthy, “locked-in” patient across the Piedmont to his new nursing home. Appel’s literary short fiction offers a quirky window into the pangs and promise of love.

The Cynic in Extremis by Jacob M. Appel (Able Muse Press)

Recipient is asked to provide a review in exchange for this book.

Offered by AppelJacobM (author): Paperback sent by author.

The Road to Vermilion Lake by Vic Cavalli (Harvard Square Editions)

Offered by VicCavalli (author): Enter to win a paperback copy of The Road to Vermilion Lake, signed by the author.
