Undiscovered Classics to Read

Description
This list is for tracking the less well-known or "modern" classics that I would like to read, those that don't appear on every 100 best books list or are typically taught in college classrooms. If you have suggestions, please add them to the list.

Explanations
aulsmith : I read it in high school, but remember it as light weight. If you haven't read other Verne, I wouldn't start here.
ahef1963: Funnily enough, it's the Verne I'd most recommend starting with. It's a bit hokey, but a lot of fun.

ahef1963: The whole series of Brother Cadfael mysteries are well-written, entertaining, and worth reading.

aulsmith : A good mystery, but the misogyny is pretty thick. Ross MacDonald is a lot like Chandler but easier to read.

aulsmith : Thurber's getting a little old for modern tastes. I think the cartoons, the fables and "The Macbeth Murder Mystery" are hilarious, but you might not want to read it cover-to-cover.

aulsmith : This was tough going. I wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't for a class. Still, it's an interesting and important book.
ahef1963 : As I was reading this novel independently, I found it impossible to understand. I gave it up.
