- Siri Paiboun is a Laotian who studied medicine in Paris, where he fell in love with and married Boua, who was committed to the cause of communism. Siri joined the Pathet Lao; Boua became disenchanted with the party and in a severe depression killed herself. The Pathet Lao triumphed in 1975 and named the country Lao People's Democratic Republic. Siri was hoping to be allowed to retire, but he was required to continue working, especially since most educated people had been killed or fled. He became the National (and indeed only) Coroner, since his bosses felt that being a doctor and a coroner were pretty much the same thing. Fortunately, he inherited Geung from his predecessor. Geung has Down Syndrome, but he also has an excellent memory, and taught Siri how to work as a coroner. The office also includes Nurse Dtui, who is hoping to qualify for a scholarship and become a coroner herself. Siri has a rather wry view of life. (English, Member-written)
