DescriptionsEdit Descriptions

Thomas Pitt is a policeman who is assigned to deal with upper-class people because of his unusually good education. In the course of his duties, he meets the upper-middle-class Ellison family, and falls in love with Charlotte. They marry, although the marriage is considered a sorry mesalliance on her side. Charlotte's sister Emily marries a peer, and thus they span much of the middle to upper spectrum of society. The sisters are able to assist Pitt in his investigations through their social connections. In later novels of the series Thomas Pitt has left the police force and is recruited into "Special Branch" which focuses on matters of political and national concern such as subversion and treason The series is discussed in "Anne Perry: Victorian 'Istorian and Murdermonger" by Linda J. Holland-Toll. In: The Detective as Historian ed. by Ray B. Browne and Lawrence A. Kreiser, Jr. (Bowling Green, OH : Bowling Green State University, 2000), pp. 265-282. (English, Unclassified)
