- The Wizard of Id is a daily newspaper comic strip created by American cartoonists Brant Parker and Johnny Hart. Beginning in 1964, the strip follows the antics of a large cast of characters in a shabby medieval kingdom called "Id". From time to time, the king refers to his subjects as "Idiots". (The title is a play on The Wizard of Oz, combined with the Freudian psychological term Id, which represents the instinctive and primal part of the human psyche.) In 1997 Brant Parker passed his duties on to his son, Jeff Parker, who had already been involved with creating Id for a decade. As of late 2002, the strip appears in some 1,000 newspapers all over the world, syndicated by Creators Syndicate. US Wizard of Id Books were in the same order as they were reproduced in the UK. The American versions had some numbering but it wasn't on every issue. After the 22nd all titles are unique to the US only. The Wizard of Id books in the UK were reproduced from the American editions by Coronet Books. These books were issued as a numbered series, but unfortunately, like with BC books, Coronet Books were not very clever when assigning the number to the next book released... with this series they totally lost the plot ! The 11th book was numbered 12 (so there was no No 11) and they did not notice their mistake for three issues ! Consequently, No 12 was numbered 13, No 13 was numbered 14 and they finally noticed and numbered No 14 as 14 (making two No 14s) ! This was really frustrating to us collectors ! To make matters worse, they did it again...! No 21 was numbered 20 (so there were two No 20s) and No 22 (the final one) was numbered 21. Sadly, Coronet Books disappeared towards the end of the Eighties, and No 22 was the last to be issued. The Wizard of Id (and BC) were very popular in Australia, where large soft-cover magazine size books were produced, reproducing strips as published in Australian newspapers. The publishers that produced these books were The Australian (1968), Ibis (from 1969 to 1975), Beaumont (from 1976 to 1984) and Capricorn (from 1985 to 1986). In addition, Budget Books produced a series of standard size and long landscape size books in 1987. (English, Unclassified)
