- The series is a mixture of fantasy and historical. It is set in the 14th century in Russia. Many of the characters in Moscow, the Grand Princes, the Metropolitan, are real people, and the scene is loving described. The family of Pyotr Vladimirich, a boyar living in Lesnaya Zemla, in northern Rus', is fictitious. The real characters are given fictitious wives and children who interact with Pyotr's family, and help make history. Ivan II of Moscow's second wife is replaced by a startling, mysterious beauty, thought by many to be a witch. Marina Ivanova was a real person, born to Ivan ii's real second wife, but in the trilogy she is an object of fear, and is sent to marry Pyotr. The marriage is happy until Marina dies in childbirth with their youngest child, Vasilii. This is a child with her grandmother's powers, including the ability to see the chyerti, characters of Russian folklore, who are being overwhelmed by the Christians. Marina and her youngest daughter are also mysteriously connected to Moroko, a demon involved with both winter and death. (English, Unclassified)
