- About My Library
A Room Without Books is like a body without a soul. - Marcus Tullius Cicero
...novels..."are the gin and whiskey of literature: they besot, without enlivening the mind." - William Cobbett
RATING SYSTEM:
Five Stars: Self Explanatory
Four Stars: Exceptionally Good, but, for whatever reason, it was not quintessentially exquisite.
Three Stars: Enjoyable; Average
Two Stars: Still Passable-probably not vibrant
One Star: They have crude acronyms for this level of bad.
CAVEATS TO RATING SYSTEM:
Some of these books are rated on how I felt about them as a child. Some have been re-read and withstood the test- others have surprised me.
My mood and energy level varies- which may effect the rating I give them. Generally, 2-1/2- 3 stars is just average- but my average might be a book that others find delightful.
I am a compulsive reader- which means that I will read something just because it is there. I do not understand reviewers that say a book is slow, or boring, or that they could not finish it. This is rare for me to experience. I usually can find something that carries me forward- even if I find a poor piece of literature. If I cannot stomach it- I'm probably not reading it- such as gruesome, emotionally illicit, some contemporary works. (There is a reason, I have never been tempted to read "50 shades of grey"
If a book in a series goes 1/2 a star higher or lower than the others in that series, there is probably some quality that did not meet my expectations- but still it carried the story forward.
READING DATES: Most books are entered by starting date only. That is because I finish most books in a single reading. I am a slower reader than I was a few years back. Recently I have been experimenting with different ways to include multiple readings. If it looks as though it took me twenty years to read a book - that is unlikely to be accurate. My mother spent decades reading "Bleak House", therefore, I won't even attempt it until I have nothing else to do.
