About meI changed careers at 48 following 10 years in corporate AT&T Wireless and after 10 years in the International-natural foods business. I have 2 teenaged daughters and a wonderful new husband. My main volunteer activity is serving on the FAME Florida Teens Read committe. I am originally from the Boston area.

This is my last course at FSU, College of Information. I started 4 years ago and continued to take classes while working full time. My major is Information Needs of Youth, School Library Media. I enjoyed 2 other classes written by Dr. Dresang (only 1 was taught by her) and have files of bibliographies. These classes helped prepare me to come to a new career prepared. Time permitting, I always read more than required on the lists because the recommended books are remarkable and worthwhile.

There are too many favorite authors to pick one. For escape reading and laughter I love Carl Hiaasen and Janet Evanovitch. At my school students and teachers love and will read Sharon Draper.

The Florida Teens Read committee keeps me reading some of everything and I am thriilled that Twilight by Stephanie Meyer won this year. I love many of the middle school titles also.

For struggling readers I believe easier books with protagonists that are similar to themself are best to use when beginning to work with a student. I also believe there is a magic book that will transform all non-readers into readers and work at finding that book for each reader.

I can talk about books for students all day.

At home I used to read aloud with my 2 daughters. Now I will read a paragraph or two if I want to get them interested in something. The oldest will go off to UCF in June and started to read medical mysteries. I feed this interest by leaving books in obvious places and never talking about them (or she will ignore them). The younger one has a tremedous curriculum and reads for English class things I dread - Shakespeare and other classics I find take too much effort away from the shear pleasure I experience with a good read.

About my libraryI am a high school library media specialist in Palm Beach County moving in 2007 from a poor, rural high school to an urban school with strong academics. In Pahokee I spent 2 years focusing mainly on reading. I will be teaching television production in 2007-2008.

My mission is to be the librarian for our staff and students as well as their families. I love it when a teacher comes often for her husband or his son.
