- About Me
- I am an artist and writer. I was born in Highland Park, Michigan in 1959. My childhood and youth were spent in metropolitan Detroit. In 1985 I moved to Chicago where I studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a BFA degree in 1991 and an MFA in 1993. Since 2004 I have lived in Minnesota.
My paintings have been exhibited at the Willis Gallery (Detroit) and the South Shore Cultural Center (Chicago). Images of my recent work may be viewed online at mnartists.org/Alan_Makinen. I have also produced and participated in several micro-media projects: zines, websites, and mail art collaborations.
My published writing — essays, travelogues, interviews, reviews, and poetry — has appeared primarily in Snowbound, my own zine, and in blogs. My writing has also been published in the periodicals Things (London), Books from Finland (Helsinki), and Giant Robot (Los Angeles). I currently maintain an artist's blog at alanmakinen.wordpress.com. - Location
