About meI divide my writing time between fiction and nonfiction (with an emphasis on writing about nature literature and women writers). My first novel, CONDOR AND HUMMINGBIRD was published in 1986 by Alice Walker's Wild Trees Press, under my former name, Charlotte Mendez, and a British Edition appeared in 1987 with The Women's Press. In more recent years, I have published short stories under the name Charlotte Zoe Walker, including an O. Henry Award story in 1991, and a Best American Short Stories honorable mention in 1993. I have edited two books on naturalist John Burroughs, both with Syracuse University Press: SHARP EYES: JOHN BURROUGHS AND AMERICAN NATURE WRITING (2000), and THE ART OF SEEING THINGS: ESSAYS BY JOHN BURROUGHS (2001), as well as a number of essays on nature writing-- most recently in WRITING THE LAND: JOHN BURROUGHS AND HIS LEGACY, edited by Daniel Payne. I am a professor emerita of the English Department at SUNY Oneonta, and in 2008, taught at Colgate University as Colgate NEH Professor of Humanities. I'm currently working on a novel about a sculptor in 12th century Burgundy. I also have a completed novel, TOUCHING EARTH, and a short story collection, both in search of a publisher. I have a great love for the short story, and am happy to see that there seems to be a renewed interest in this great literary form, whose great practitioners range from Chekhov, Lawrene and Hoffmann, to contemporary masters like Janette Turner Hospital, Raymond Carver, Donald Barthelme, Stephen Millhauser, Ann Beattie, and Charles Baxter.

About my libraryThe two libraries I use most are the Gilbertsville Library in the Four County Library System in upstate New York, and the Milne Library at SUNY Oneonta.
I love the Gilbertsville Library for its lovely old stone building with a rich history, as well as its warm and neighborly feeling, and the benefits of the Four County Library System. I'm also grateful for the Milne Library, with its large scholarly collection, fine staff of trained librarians, and many resources.
