About meA house built of books -- as a child that’s where Diane Parker envisioned herself living. It has become something close to a reality. Her house, a two story yellow colonial shaded by stately Oaks in Chesterfield, Missouri, is bursting at the seams with books! And no wonder. Her daughters Loriane and Mary live with her, and they too collect books. There’s barely enough room for all of them and their Pembroke Welsh Corgis Vicki and Phoebe. Click on the Corgi Reviews link on Parker’s teacher web page at Southwest Middle School to see the dogs and their latest book reviews. (They tend to favor books about animal lovers.)
Parker enjoys swimming in her pool in the summer, giving garden tea parties, discussing books with other book lovers, and, of course, writing. One of her greatest pleasures is sharing her love of books and writing with young people.
Her publications include features in St. Louis area newspapers, articles in teaching publications, and curriculum-related work for hire, including a book of story starters. She has published poems in literary magazines and is a former fiction editor at River Styx. Her essays on the craft of writing were featured in MOScribbles, the magazine for Missouri’s children’s writers, and A recent personal essay appeared on the web site of National Public Radio: Two years ago she was one of fifteen semi finalists for The Editor’s Prize in Nonfiction at The Missouri Review. Her essay was titled “Imperfect Miracle” and concerned her daughter Loriane’s recovery after being critically injured in an automobile accident. The magazine’s editor has encouraged Parker to turn that story into a book-length memoir.
Parker recently completed a first draft of a middle grades novel. It was critiqued by students in her 5/6 block of Read 180 after she read the manuscript to them and showed them how she had planned the book’s scenes using baseball card holders and file cards in a three ring binder. Over the summer, she plans to revise and submit the manuscript to publishers. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

About my libraryIt started with the living room. After all, who needs a living room anyway? Since, it has spread upstairs and down, all wround the house. I read a lot of memoirs and history-related books. Being an English teacher, I am also partial to the Classics. My favorite contemporary author is Rosamund Pilcher. I reread all her books and short stories last year. They never grow old.
