Best selling leaf vacuum mulchers and leaf blowers: How to choose a leaf vacuum mulcher?
With a leaf vacuum mulcher, you can comfortably remove all the fallen leaves. And not only that! You might be surprised, but with a leaf blower you'll also tackle other dirt like twigs, bark, or sawdust, you'll remove new snow from your driveway, and you'll be cleaning gutters in no time and perfect way.
Before you start choosing the ideal leaf vacuum mulcher, think about a few questions:
How wide is your garden?
How many leaves will you remove? Will it be removing a few small piles of leaves from time to time or do you need to remove a large number of leaves regularly?
Do you also want to suck up trash like fallen tree branches, etc.?
How much noise can you tolerate?
What weight can you carry?
Do you have an electrical outlet near your garden?
Your answers will help you quickly and easily decide what type of leaf vacuum mulcher you need and what parameters are important to you.
Type of leaf vacuum mulchers by function
When buying leaf cleaning equipment, you can come across 3 types of equipment:
- leaf vacuum mulcher
- leaf blower
- combine blower and vacuum mulcher
The classic leaf vacuum mulcher sucks into the bag. After that, the remaining task for you is to pour the bag into the compost. With a vacuum mulcher, you can take the best care of small dirt and smaller piles of leaves. The machine usually does not have enough power to sow a larger number of leaves.
The blower, on the other hand, does not suck leaves but uses a stream of air to blow all the leaves straight into a pile. You can use a blower especially in case you have a really abundant supply of leaves in your garden. It is also suitable for cleaning freshly fallen snow or cleaning gutters.
Are you wondering if you need a vacuum mulcher or a leaf blower? The good news is you can have both. Most quality products include both functions. Therefore, combined blowers and vacuum mulchers are maximally popular.
In addition, for combination units, you can choose between dual and interchangeable nozzle units. Both types have advantages and disadvantages, we will picture them in the table.
Types of leaf vacuum cleaners by Power Source
The drive type is an absolutely important parameter. Once you make a decision on the type of engine, the most important thing is behind you.
Leaf vacuum mulchers differ in the type of drive, you can find 3 types :
Corded electric leaf vacuum mulchers
You can use a corded vacuum mulcher, especially in smaller gardens. You have to take into account the fact that cables can restrict your movement, on the other hand, leaf vacuums are definitely the cheapest.
Cordless electric leaf vacuum mulcher
You can use the cordless vacuum anywhere where cables are difficult to reach. For example, if you have a large number of shrubs or trees in your garden, you can comfortably avoid them with a battery-powered vacuum mulcher.
Thanks to the weaker airflow, it does not harm even delicate bonsai. On the other hand, they often cannot cope with heavy wet leaves.

Gas leaf vacuum mulcher
Gasoline vacuum mulchers will be welcomed by everyone with a larger garden. Thanks to the absence of cables, you can easily avoid larger obstacles.
The leaf vacuum mulcher has a very powerful motor, so it vacuums wet leaves without any problems. However, high performance comes with higher noise levels, gas vacuum mulchers are also relatively heavy.
Power consumption informs us about the amount of energy consumed, or how much energy is consumed by the leaf blower.
In the case of electric leaf vacuum, mulchers should move into the power consumption of at least around 2,000 W for a petrol leaf vacuum then around 750 W.
Manufacturers report the strength of leaf vacuums in terms of suction power and blowing speed. Suction power is also sometimes called suction power. The values of this parameter tell us how many leaves the machine can suck. Suction capacity is measured in liters per second or cubic meters per hour.
The optimal value of suction power for normal use is about 170 to 220 l/s (or 620 to 800 m³/h).
If you are going to buy a leaf blower or a combination device, blowing speed is equally important. The minimum airflow speed should not fall below 200 km/h. For normal use, the optimal value is from 250 - 300 km / h.
The volume of collection bag
Vacuum leaves are collected into the collection basket. Since you definitely don't want to empty the garbage at any time, pay attention to the adequate size of the collection bag.
However, since of course larger, the capacity of the collection bag increases the cost of the equipment, for the occasional sowing of leaves in a small garden it is not necessary to immediately purchase the largest sample of the collection bag on the market.
To be more clear, we can divide the possible bag volume into 3 categories:
Up to 30 l
Up to 60 l
Over 60 liters
Collection bags with a volume of up to 30 l are suitable only for owners of really small gardens. Being ideal for most users, we recommend values around 35 to 45 liters. If you have a large garden or you want to enjoy high comfort at a higher investment cost, you will appreciate models with a bag volume above 60 liters.
The weight of the best leaf vacuum mulcher will significantly affect the comfort when working. You will find on the market machines that weigh from 1.5 to 10 kg.
Because people can carry a different number of kilograms, there is no exact rule that dictates the optimal weight of a leaf vacuum mulcher. However, we recommend that the general user choose a leaf vacuum weighing up to 4 and a half kg. Even machines that weigh more at first don't sound like much to you, but after dozens of minutes of use, you'll feel every kilo extra.
Nozzle size and shape
The nozzle should be wide enough and shaped so as to not be obstructed. Therefore, a circular tube with a minimum diameter of 15 cm is ideal. The diameter can be a few centimeters smaller if you only buy leaf blowers.
When using a leaf vacuum mulcher, you will never completely avoid noise, but a traditional leaf vacuum cleaner is still the quietest. If performance is your priority and you don't mind higher noise levels, go for a gas vacuum mulcher.
It is worth noting the material for making the leaf blower. Today we most often encounter 3 types of materials:
We recommend avoiding the former altogether. It is not highly resistant to damage and does not dazzle even with long service life.
For the average user, devices made of hard plastic are the ideal compromise between price and durability.
The most durable, but also the most expensive, the material is metal. The lifespan of metal leaf blowers is on the order of several decades.
With vacuum mulchers and leaf blowers, you can remove fallen leaves, clippings, needles, and smaller twigs. However, if you choose a vacuum mulcher with a plastic fan, you must be careful that rocks and sharp objects can permanently damage the machine.
Leaf vacuums can also collect small dirt on paved and other solid surfaces. If it is supplemented with the function of a crusher, in addition to leaves, it will crush, for example, twigs after cutting ornamental thyme.
Garden vacuums are one of those extremely demanding maintenance-free devices. Rather, regularity is important.
For combined units, the impeller vents should be checked regularly for blockages. If this happens, there is a risk of damage to the ventilation system and overheating of the engine. For trouble-free operation and long life, the fan only needs to be cleaned regularly.
Gas-powered vacuum mulchers need the most care. For units with this type of transmission, the air and fuel filters should be checked. You should pay attention to the air filter every 10 hours of use. Once a year, a fuel filter is sufficient for inspection, ideally by a professional.
