- A WORLD FULL OF COLOR database!
Update September 2021: This is a labor of love and COVID has put me way behind updating the database with new releases! The one upside of that is the knowledge that there are so many many fabulous new books coming out that are by and about people from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds and a broad spectrum of experiences! I am working to keep adding new books and am open to any help on that quarter.
Original profile:
This library was developed to serve as a collection of books celebrating racial and ethnic diversity. Created in 2009, it was originally intended as a source for readers trying to find mainstream books featuring main characters of color. This was a challenge, since most books with nonwhite main characters tended to focus solely on historical fiction and struggle. Parents and teachers and children wanted a wide range of possibilities: mysteries, fantasies, friendship stories, adventures, picture books, chapter books, popular series, books about scientists and leaders, etc., that featured main characters of color. For ten years, this was the main purpose of the Diversity Database. To qualify, there were two criteria: 1, the main character of the book must be a person of color, and 2, the story, while it might include themes of identity, was not primarily driven by issues surrounding race and ethnicity.
But the wheels of publishing have at very long last begun to squeak and roll toward inclusion, and while representation is still vastly lopsided, it isn't quite as hard to find mainstream books featuring main characters of color. And given the prominence of discussions about race and identity in our culture, and the importance of celebrating and acknowledging those struggles and triumphs, it now feels as though the purpose and need for this database is shifting.
The original criteria excludes so many AMAZING books from the database, and I have a hard time tolerating this exclusion. So I am considering different ways of handling this, from opening it up to all books featuring main characters of color regardless of storyline, to creating an #OwnVoices database inclusive of all stories by and about people of color that are published for children and teens. I'm open to all feedback about this update to the database. - Location
