Series description

Founded by Joseph Mabley Dent in 1906, with the goal of creating a 1000-volume library of world classics. The goal was reached in 1956. Some numbers appear to have been reused as multi-part works were reissued in single volumes. The series ceased in the 1980s with the sale of JM Dent and Sons, but has since been relaunched by Alfred Knopf.

Important: In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, Dent reused numbers that had been previously used for other works. Dent also issued significantly revised versions (with different contents) of similar titles, using the same numbers. Thus, more than one work can have the same number.
