The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi: A new fantasy series set a thousand years before The City of Brass (An Amina al-Sirafi Adventure, 1) by Shannon Chakraborty
Okay start with the good. This was a mostly fun story and an engaging main character. I found myself rooting for her and the whole crew. The story was well written and well researched. This read very mature and smart.
I read this when it was announced as a finalist for the Hugo. Which brings me to the bad. This wasn't Scifi and barely Fantasy and it really didn't bring a lot to the party which is what I expect when something is a finalist for the Hugo. One minor thing that really took me out of the story, most of the LGB elements felt shoe horned and pretty ham fisted.
Still, it's a fun adventure novel and I would mostly recommend this as a light read.

Hammajang Luck: A Thrilling Science Fiction Crime Novel with a Touch of Romance, Take on the Tech God and Win Big! by Makana Yamamoto
This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me. First, the good. I enjoyed the actual heist section; it was relatively taut and engaging. I enjoyed the way the station was described; it felt pretty real and lived in, and the disparity between the haves and have-nots is nicely done. The addition of the small business relationship with the neighbourhood is also nice, it reminded me a lot of my home when I was a kid.
The bad. The relationship between the two mains felt completely unearned, especially at the end. There were a lot of holes in the actual plan. Now, in a book like this, I normally wouldn't let that bother me. But there were a couple of instances of the main character getting angry with Angel due to her treatment by her boss, right after being really angry with Angel and knowing about her betrayal, which just took me out of it. The hacker was so annoying, but more than that, a bit of a Deus ex machina. I hate how hackers are often portrayed this way. The stakes didn't feel that high, and the romance felt unearned. There just wasn't enough lost for what was gained. I almost put this down, but I'm glad I didn't because while all of that is true, the heist section, the interplay between everyone, and to a lesser extent, the party was very well done. And that meant something. I think if you are willing to overlook some really predictable characters and a few plot holes, but enjoy some fun dialogue and well-done settings, this is a book you may enjoy

Nice intro into AI prompting
This is a favorite I have to say. I read this all the way back in the 90's and was completely bowled over. How could I not be, I love classic lit. The writing top notch, and even though it's fairly long I breezed though it. I love the shift in style with each story, and he really does shift his style for each story. There are likeable and unlikeable characters. They are nuanced and change and feel alive. The various sights are unique and feel lived in. Most of the stories are referential and they feel like a love letter to the genre that they refer to. Highly recommended!
Saw this and thought, "I should write a review because I read this" then realized I couldn't remember anything about this book. 1 Star
This is just not for me. It's very high minded and there are some interesting ideas here, but it was so poorly written that was distracting. It felt very YA, not that there is anything wrong with YA but that's not what I was looking for.
Brilliant! Really. It was compelling and well written. The characters were fully formed and alive, and reacted in a way that made sense. I'm not sure what I expected as this is a reread, but I hadn't read it in 30 years or more, but this as genre fiction is quite simply among the best.
