Lotta hybe so I thought I'd check it out. The ultimate series of novels about a 17th C Scotsman had already been written by D.Dunnett (The Lymond Chronicles)and still holds the title "hands down". Outlander is a "bodice ripper" by comparison, altho a bit better than some, in that it relates more historical fact, and has a fiesty hero and heroine. Its a fun read but certainly not worthy of all the hype. The following books in the series are pale copies of the first, just in different locations. The peculiar plot line which has Jamie irresistible to so many men to the point of ruined careers and broken lives is totally unnessary and a glimpse into the author's psyche. Note to author: Write another book about gay relationships, it doesn't really belong in this book.
You can read this book as a tale of war, betrayal, romance and adventure by skimming over the various obscure Latin, French, Old English, German, etc. poetry references. Or you can stock up on the author's companion books - in particular The Lymond Poetry - for an in-depth read. Whatever way you choose to read the first in this series of 6 spectacular books, you will be opening the door to a life time of re-reads, if for no other reason than simply being unable to take it all in in one reading. Thank you Dame Dunnett for creating Lymond and his magical world filled with amazing characters, wondrous places and a loving homage to 16th century European literature, art and music.
