I just purchased a Kindle. It has features to convert written books to audio and (I think) play true audiobooks. Has anyone tried these audio functions on Kindle?

I do not have a Kindle, but using the audio feature drains the battery quite fast - I think it's about 4 hrs of listening per charge.

I'd be interested in learning if this software works, as there are more books on Kindle, which are not yet on audio, to which I'd love to listen, not to mention a lot more free books on Kindle.

I can't listen to the computer readers, it just really bugs me. I know there are better (more human sounding) TTS things that you can buy or download which would probably be preferable if you're reading anything in the public domain. It certainly works, but for me it's in no way a replacement for a human reader (I can't stand some of the humans they let read books, let alone a computer).
I have a Kindle Keyboard and love that I can play Audible (and any MP3) files on it. The battery lasts longer than four hours with audio in my experience. Not as long as an MP3 player, but headphones are uncomfortable for me, generally, so the built in speaker is an important feature, and it certainly has a better battery life than listening on a cellphone. I use it to play familiar, well-loved books as I got to sleep and use it to listen to books when I'm in the kitchen or cleaning around the house. I live in fear of it breaking since you can't buy that model new anymore.

I have a brand new Kindle Fire, and couldn't last a whole page being read to by a computer voice.

The automated audio sounds terrible to my ears but give it a try and find out for yourself. BTW it only works for some books - publishers have to allow the functionality to be 'released' for each title. Many don't.
