It's December 25th, Christmas Day, Husband is playing Call of Duty: Black Ops and I am getting ready to read a book.

What to choose......

Great idea. Even better: 1 book I own and 1 book from the library for every book I buy.

Good luck! Last year I read two books I already owned for every book I bought, plus cleared off my shelves and gave away a ton of books I was never going to read. I ended up cutting my pile of unread books down from 300 to 100.

Wow. I'm officially impressed. And I SO need to do that.

Good luck, Kathy! I've got almost 150 books to be read, and very little income at the moment - I need to do this!

Thus it begins...
Today I am starting Aces High by
George R. R. Martin.
Confession time, I bought this book yesterday.
I'll consider this a bought book....

Look, this was a reprint and I've been looking forward to this book for ages. I know.....

2 whole seconds, huh? That is longer than it normally takes me. Obviously, work on the reflexes is indicated :)

Finished Aces High, I really have enjoyed these, but I wish he would write another Songs of Fire and Ice book.

#14: I refuse to even start the Songs of Fire and Ice series until he finished writing it.

#14 I know, I wish I had NEVER started.....

Finished Food Revolution, The: How Your Diet Can Help Save Your Life and Our World by John Robbins.
The book was interesting and depressing....I don't consume much meat, but I love salt, lots and lots of salt....

So for those of you counting

Oh man, it gets worse....I bought a NOOK.

26allsmilesk21
Jan 15, 2011, 11:09 pm

You'll have to update how you like the nook...there is just something about the feel of a book in my hands that I don't think I can replace. My amazon account would tend to agree...how on earth did you purge books enraptured? I would be constantly worrying about the 200 I got rid of!

27alcottacre
Jan 16, 2011, 5:44 am

#25: I love mine!

28davisfamily
Jan 16, 2011, 1:41 pm

Purging is good for the soul and good for space. (Our books go back into the Library Sale stream) I tend to have stacks of books, piles about. I also tend to buy books based on things like.. cover art. Sometimes whats inside doesn't match the outside.:(
I also go through phases, like bad 50's Science Fiction or Chinese History or just about anything else.

I am now trying to actually read more reviews and choose wisely. (O.K. Who am I kidding)

I'll keep you posted on my NOOK adventures. I am hoping that it will prove to be a space saver and not a money pit...

29alcottacre
Jan 17, 2011, 3:57 am

I am using my Nook as a space saver too. I really like having it (I was not sure I would!)

30dk_phoenix
Jan 17, 2011, 8:53 am

I also really like my Nook, though I resisted eReader technology for the longest time. As I've said before, the Nook just means MORE books for me... not replacement of paper books. There are many classics available for free for it, along with plenty of small press digital books you can't get in print. It's been *fantastic*.

Just Finished:

Piper in the Woods by Philip K. Dick
The Skull by Philip K. Dick
I am a fan of the shorter novella, both of these were excellent. Science Fiction mixed with depression, you have to love Phillip K. Dick
Both bought and read on my NOOK....

Combines dystopian elements with very good interpersonal relationships.

Yea, Yea Just finished Horns of Ruin by Tim Akers. Who could resist a sword and sorcery steampunk book.....

So anyways, the book was great, nice twist ending, fast paced, touch of religion tossed in for fun.

Well I have read 11 books this year.
And I would have read more, but there are games to play.....

I just finished Name of the Wind and Tartuffe.

Did I enjoy Tartuffe? Nope.

44jolerie
Mar 1, 2011, 12:41 am

Thats a great idea you have to read 1 book for every book you buy. Sadly I do not have any discipline so I would fail miserably with that goal. :)

45ffortsa
Mar 1, 2011, 1:00 pm

I think Tartuffe is much more enjoyable when well-staged - so much of it is visual comedy, or should be. Did you read the Wilbur translation?

46davisfamily
Mar 24, 2011, 9:19 am

Yes, I read the Wilbur translation.
Yea, I had someone tell me that the play was awesome and that I would enjoy the book....

OK, OK There was a sale at the library, what was I suppose to do???? And Consider Phlebas was only .99 for the NOOK.

I bought The Fountianhead and Bonfire of the Vanities for .75.
Please Note, I went to a Library Sale and only bought 2 books.

So here it goes.

Owned 7
Bought 9

I am reading Consider Phlebas right now.

49davisfamily
May 12, 2011, 6:28 pm

Consider Phlebas was pretty good.
Gamma World Sooner Dead by Mel Odom was interesting, about what you would expect from a book written about a game.

I have not been reading lately, we had a bit of tornado activity. :(

But reading provides so much escapism, and does not require electricity.

I don't know about this e-reader thing. I do like my NOOK, but I am a flipper. I like to read the front, then skip to the back, then finish in the middle.
And why haven't I been reading???
