Happy new year! What books are you reading to start the year off right?

My first book of 2011 was an audiobook which I listened to on my drive today -- The Book of Three. I've been meaning to read the Prydain Chronicles for some time now, so finally made a start. I enjoyed it very much, but will probably have to go back and read a paper copy some time, since I feel like I missed things by listening.

I've been reading the Tomorrow Series by John Marsden. I'm on the final book The Other Side of Dawn

Still working on 365 Thank Yous, which is quite enjoyable. Inspiring me to write Christmas gift thank you notes for all gifts, not just the select few I normally do (e.g., grandmothers, surprise gifts, etc.). I am leaving in a little while for the first leg of a 10 day trip, and I think I've finally narrowed my travel selections to This Is Not Chick Lit and High Tide in Tuscon. I'm also debating taking a Donna Leon mystery, as I always enjoy them, and neither of my other reads are sink-into stories. However, space is quite limited, and I have work to do (ahem, finalizing my syllabus) and lots of professional reading, so perhaps limiting my choices would aid productivity.

I was trying to finish The Blind Assassin before the year ended. I was 300 pages into the 500+ and I had to give up. The clue I had to make this decision? I sighed each time I picked it up. Any way, I had Shades of Grey standing by for my first read of the new year. Now I have a smile on my face when I pick up my book!

I finished 365 Thank Yous on the plane yesterday, then started This Is Not Chick Lit, which is excellent but somewhat intense, so I picked up Mennonite in a Little Black Dress in the airport, which is hilarious so far! I felt a bit sorry for my fellow passengers, as I would periodically burst into laughter while reading, but it was so nice to have a change to funny that I didn't really care. Plus, I sat beside weird eyelash pulling guy and behind nose-picking guy, so really, being the laughing woman isn't so bad... Planes are public spaces, people!!

#9 mamzel:
Ohh! That was one of the first books I read last year. I loved Shades of Grey. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I'm reading my ER book, The Demon Trapper's Daughter, and can see how an editor read it in one sitting. It hooked me in pretty well that I only stopped reading because it was 2am. I've almost cried twice already while reading it. (If you're reading this, kirby, I'm on page 133. ;)

For now I have to put my ER aside to reread A Raisin in the Sun so my youngest sister has someone to help or make suggestions or tips on her essay. I haven't read it in twelve years.

Jan 5, 2011, 1:59 pm

I thought The Demon Trapper's Daughter was pretty good. Some of the language, place settings, and descriptions seemed a bit much to be YA, though. The main character's seventeen. I'd suggest the book be for readers that age and older. Otherwise, it was an interesting take on what the future would be like...if demons were on the planet. I'm eager for book two, but it's a ways away, I'm sure.

18kirbyowns
Jan 5, 2011, 2:02 pm

I've finished The Demon Trapper's Daughter. I actually finished it Sunday on the plane. I have to sit down and work on my review. It was a pretty good read. It took me the week to read it because I was so tired each night back at the villa.

I've also read the Godchild series (all 8 books) in the last few days. Easy reads, and a little different. I don't even think I've added them to LT yet.

Last night was a night for crocheting, so I did not read anything.

I'm still working on Shadow Kiss, and have several books lined up to start. I'm also ready for a professional read, so I believe I will be starting the book Real Boys.

Happy New Year to all! (I'm behind on thread reading as usual but this always seems the easiest one to jump in to.)

Shades of Grey and The Lost Hero are on a shelf waiting for me so I'll be interested to compare my thoughts with all of yours sometime this year. For now I'm on a Jim Butcher kick with Furies of Calderon - I love when a 500 page fantasy novel seems to end too soon!

Next up will probably be Delirium by Lauren Oliver that I got from ER. I've read some good reviews of it so I hope it lives up to the hype!

I hope Delirium lives up to it, too! It's a book that I have the release date written in my planner for.

I'm rereading Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair while eagerly waiting for the new Thursday Next book that will be released at last in March.

I listened to Before Green Gables while driving this past weekend. It was . . .okay. Not cringe-worthy, and for a prequel to something as well-loved as Anne of Green Gables, that's saying something.

Now I'm reading Sabriel. I feel like I should love it, but I'm finding it slow going. Maybe I just haven't gotten in to it yet.

You Had Me at Woof was cute. The author tells mostly about her work rescuing Boston Terriers. It had laugh out loud moments and, like most dog stories, some tears.

Now I am reading the graphic novel The Exile which is Outlander more from Jamie's point of view.

Finished Delirium and still composing my thoughts for my review. Halfway through it I was getting a little annoyed that it seemed cliche and predictable, but it managed to take some interesting twists and turns that I didn't see coming. It's a little more angsty than I would have preferred but overall the writing was pretty good. I'd say in general I liked (but maybe didn't love) it.

I'm back to Count of Monte Cristo on my Kindle. Not sure how I never read anything by Dumas before this, but so far very thumbs up!

I finished The Iliad earlier this week, and I finished Ptolemy's Gate yesterday.

I finished Mennonite in a Little Black Dress on the first leg of my flight home last Tuesday, and started The House at Riverton on the second leg on my new Nook! I am still in shock that I won a Nook at the ebooks panel I attended at my conference!! As life has been crazy since my return last week - the semester started and I was at yet another conference this past weekend - I am still reading the Riverton book; it's superb so far. I'm also still working on This Is Not Chick Lit and The Naked Gospel, both of which I started on my trip. Worth the wait; it's really cool explaining it to your mates becuase there like, 'So whites are treated like blacks were?' 'Correct, but they haven't got right yet so everybodys being racist to whites?' So why had he kidnapped her, why has a bomb gone off!?' 'Ew there kissing! There discribing it in detail!' There reactions are funny, and you discuss racistium and how you want to hop in it for 5 minutes give Callum a hug and then let it continue! :L

Anyway, I got sent home sick today and therefore finally finished The Lost Hero. I had vague memories that stuff from Percy Jackson might be pertinent, so I borrowed the e-audiobook of The Lightning Thief from the library. I love technology. I finished The House at Riverton earlier this week, which was a lovely read. I was sad to see it end, but quickly moved onto Olive Kitteridge, which has been on my TBR/wishlist for a while and is my book club's February selection. Unfortunately, though, I'm not enjoying it as much as hoped, but I think that might be due in part to the fact that I loved the Riverton novel so much, and the Kitteridge book is a physical book, not an ebook on my Nook. Hey. Anyone reading The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare? I just read that she's continuing the series (I thought book 3 would be the end!) with 3 more books. She says you should really read The Clockwork Angel before reading book 4, City of Fallen Angels. Maybe not news to everyone else, but I like both series (although Clockwork Angel was different.

#62 - I've seen a lot of blog reviews for Across the Universe and from what I garner most people have given it mostly positive feedback.

#67 - I feel like that series is cropping up everywhere! I remember seeing the first couple book at Barnes & Noble a while ago but I passed it over because I thought it looked too cheesy-romancey. Are they good? Which book is best to start with?

I just started an ARC that my librarian aunt lent me called The Oracle of Stamboul and so far I'm really hooked on it. Historical fiction, with a bibliophile for a main character - definitely my kind of story!

el: You'll want to start with City of Glass with The Mortal Instruments series. It's the first book of the 3 that are out now. Clockwork Angel begins a prequel to the series, and both series are ment to compliment each other. You don't have to read one series to understand the other, but it's best to read the books within each series in order (hope that made sense).
