Just moved to Texas (Victoria) and am looking for great bookstores to travel to on my day's off. Anything in the San Antonio, Austin, Houston area or surrounding towns near Victoria. If it's an awesome store, I am willing to travel to see it so don't worry about distance.. just looking for great bookstores.

I can always spend hours in the North and South Lamar locations of Half Price in Austin-- and the one on Broadway in San Antonio often has some great finds on the bargain shelf. (I know it's not near Victoria, but there's the biggest Half Price I've ever seen in Dallas.)

San Antonio is your closest city, and there are several Half-Price Bookstores - and there's even a LibraryThingite (LibraryThinger?) working in one of them. There's another one in San Marcos, just off of I-25.

I can't comment on Houston, as I haven't been there in probably 15 years.

Austin has 5 HP-B stores, a few B&N, and in the corner of 6th St. and Lamar, there's a great Independent bookstore called Book People. MrsHouseLibrary and I are there at least once a month. There's also another called 12th St Books. It's got a good selection, but unless the owner happens to be there, it's by appointment only.

We were in Dallas/FW this past summer and spent 4 days touring art museums, antique shops and bookstores. I think there are 11 H-PBs in that area, and the one that KatrinkaV mentioned is HUGE! I couldn't help but think a bus was going to come by to take people to other parts of the store, but none ever showed up.

Let me know when you're coming to Austin, and maybe I could take you to these places.

You may want to check out the Group - Favorite Bookstores. I created that Group a few years ago - prior to LT having anything related to venues. I'm not sure if there's much on Texas in there, but if you sort the subject lines, they should mostly arrange themselves by State and then City.

Excellent thank you! I especially love visiting independent bookstores. I shall look into all of these :)

I live in the Woodlands and one of my favorite places to go is The Hard To Find Bookstore in Humble. They do not carry "Harlequin" style romances but they carry just about everything else.
